Eagles ready for another chance
by Jason Stone

NORTH VALLEY – Sandra Day O’Connor’s boys basketball team had difficulty with talented Trevor Browne in two regular season meetings this year. The Eagles, however, are not ready to give in to the Bruins a third time.

The two Northwest Region powers could meet for a third time this season at the region tournament championship game Feb. 15 at Trevor Browne. The schools are the top two seeds at this week’s regionals, which features the top six teams in the league.

O’Connor, which lost at home to Trevor Browne 68‑51 on Feb. 9, earned a first‑round bye at regionals and will play the winner of the Boulder Creek‑Mountain Ridge first‑round game.

5A‑Division I Trevor Browne, meanwhile, put the finishing touches on a perfect 14‑0 region record with its second decisive victory of the season over 5A‑II O’Connor. A 20‑7 run for Trevor Browne in the third quarter turned a relatively close game at halftime into a rout.

O’Connor, which was playing without leading scorer Ethan Esch, was led by Curtis Mitchell’s 12 points.

In the Eagles’ only other action last week, Mitchell poured in 28 points in a 77‑72 road win at North Canyon. O’Connor battled back from double digits down in the first half to earn the big win.

After this week’s regionals, the 5A‑Division II state tournament is set to begin Feb. 21. The top 16 teams in power points will qualify. The tournament runs through March 6 with a championship game at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale.

Boulder Creek backs into postseason despite losses

ANTHEM – It wasn’t the way Boulder Creek wanted to enter the playoffs, but the Jaguars will still take it. Boulder Creek backed its way into this week’s Northwest Region postseason tournament as the team lost its final three games but still qualified.

The Jaguars lost consecutive games at Kingman, home against Deer Valley and at Goldwater to finish the regular season 8‑16 overall and 4‑10 in the Northwest Region. The Feb. 2 loss to Kingman settled fifth place in the region, meaning the Jaguars entered regionals as the No. 6 seed.

Boulder Creek was scheduled to face third‑seeded Mountain Ridge (15‑10, 11‑3) Feb. 12 in the first round of the Northwest Region tournament. Results were unavailable at press time.

Bulldogs end season with big win over Jags

NORTH VALLEY – Goldwater ended its season on a high note with a 68‑49 win Feb. 9 over neighbor Boulder Creek.

It was only the Bulldogs’ second Northwest Region of the season and fifth overall. Goldwater (5‑21, 2‑12) failed to qualify for the postseason region tournament, however, as it finished two games behind Boulder Creek in the standings for the sixth and final playoff spot.

The Bulldogs won two of their final five games since breaking a seven‑game losing streak Jan. 30. Goldwater tried to make it two wins in a row to end the season, but Kingman used a 25‑12 run in the fourth quarter Feb. 6 to beat the Bulldogs 77‑63.

Cactus Shadows comes up short for third time

CAVE CREEK – The third time was not the charm for Cactus Shadows, which went 0‑for‑3 this season against Notre Dame after losing again last week.

The Falcons dropped the two regular season meetings between the two teams, then came up short 59‑52 in the Wells Fargo 2 Region tournament championship game Feb. 9 at Notre Dame.

Cactus Shadows, which earned the No. 9 seed at this week’s 4A‑Division II state tournament, stayed much closer to Notre Dame than the last meeting–a 78‑42 Notre Dame win on Jan. 26.

Phillip Aholt again led the team with 19 points, followed by 14 from Kyle Foley and nine from Ryan Aholt, who missed much of the season with an injury. Tom Fow did most of the damage for Notre Dame, scoring a game‑high 20 points.

Cactus Shadows (13‑15) had won seven of 10 games before the Notre Dame loss. The Falcons vaulted from 15th to ninth in 4A‑II Power Points in the span of a week. However, the No. 9 seed for the state tournament might turn out to be a curse. The Falcons missed hosting a game by one seed and instead had to travel to Palo Verde in Tucson Feb. 13. Results of the game were unavailable at press time.

The winner would likely play at No. 1 Desert Edge in the quarterfinals Feb. 16.
