Bike
safety campaign started
The
Arizona Governor’s Office
of Highway Safety has awarded
funding to the Arizona Department
of Transportation for the
development of a statewide
Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety
Awareness Campaign.
The
campaign is the most recent
phase in the state’s ongoing
Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan.
One
or two Arizona communities
will be chosen from those
expressing interest in implementing
a pilot program aimed at increasing
safety awareness of motorists,
bicyclists and pedestrians.
The program will focus on
increasing knowledge and motivating
positive behavioral changes
through a public education
effort, which will include
community participation and
a media campaign.
ADOT
will select the program focus
areas based on an assessment
of criteria and input received
from interested units of local
government, organizations
and tribal communities. Criteria
for selection include: geographic
areas demonstrating the greatest
need; areas underserved by
previous state or federal
funding for similar programs;
available resources or staff
to assist with implementation
and the desire to participate
in the program.
Recommendations
from earlier phases of Arizona’s
Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety
Plan have already resulted
in improved conditions for
bicyclists and pedestrians
throughout the state. To view
that plan, visit www.azbikeped.org/statewide‑bicycle‑pedestrian‑intro.html.
With
a scheduled start date in
early 2008, interested communities
and organizations are asked
to express interest by submitting
a brief statement addressing
the criteria of need, underserved
status, available resources/staff,
and desire to participate,
as listed above, by Dec. 14.

statements to Michael N. Sanders,
