Goldwater boys hope momentum stays

NORTH VALLEY – With wins in its last three games and four of the last five, Goldwater's boys soccer team is hoping that it hasn't been off too long to ruin the momentum they built before Christmas.

The Bulldogs (6‑5‑0) got over the .500 mark in mid‑December with consecutive victories over Notre Dame, Shadow Mountain and St. Mary's. In the latter two games, Goldwater scored a combined 10 goals.

But the lengthy holiday break became even longer earlier this week when a bomb threat at Boulder Creek Jan. 8 forced the postponement of the first game of the spring semester for both teams.

Boulder Creek (2‑9‑1 overall, 0‑1 Northwest Region) was also eager to get back to play after going 10 straight games without a win dating back to Nov. 30.

Goldwater is now scheduled to begin region play Jan. 10 at Deer Valley. Boulder Creek returns Jan. 12 at home against Deer Valley. The new date for the game between Goldwater and Boulder Creek has not been set.

Both teams will finish the season with region games, leading to the 5A‑II state tournament, which begins Jan. 30.

In other local 5A boys soccer news, O'Connor was blanked 4‑0 against Trevor Browne Jan. 8 to fall to 0‑12‑0 on the season. The Eagles will finish the season with six straight region games through Jan. 25.

Cactus Shadows in midst of region play

CAVE CREEK – Don't blink or you might miss the Wells Fargo 2 Region boys soccer season. Cactus Shadows was scheduled to play its second of four region games Jan. 9 at Sunnyslope in a game played after press time.

The Falcons (3‑3‑0 overall, 1‑0) lost to Flagstaff 3‑0 in a non‑region game Jan. 3, the team's only competition since the week before Christmas.

After the Sunnyslope game, the Falcons will also face Notre Dame (Jan. 12) at home this week.
