Dorothy
E. Vander Leest, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007 at Mayo Hospital.
Dorothy was born Feb. 11, 1919 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the
daughter of Francis and Lillian Marshall. In 1941 she married
Robert C. Vander Leest who died in 1977. They lived in Glendale,
a suburb of Milwaukee, WI until 1972 when they moved to Cave
Creek. Dorothy leaves two daughters, Marsha Heckel of Sante
Fe, NM and Barbara Vander Leest of Cave Creek. Also surviving
are her brother, Robert Marshall of Santa Barbara, CA, son in
law William Heckel Jr., grand
children
William Heckel III and Andrea Heckel of Dallas, and Robert Heckel
of New York City, Andreas’ husband John Pizza, and great gand
children Quinn and Sammy Pizza.
Dorothy
was a long time resident of Cave Creek, and the owner of Desert
Treasures, her store in Spanish Village. Dorothy and her husband,
Robert, first came to Cave Creek in 1963 to visit their friends
Jack and Jean Owen who owned the old Sierra Vista Ranch. After
moving here, they managed Spanish Village until 1977. Dorothy
was a long time member of the Desert Foothills Womens Club,
former President of the Soroptimists International of the Saguaro
Foothills, a former board member of the Cave Creek‑Carefree
Chamber of Commerce, and a founding member of the Black Mountain
Chapter DAR. Among her friends she will be remembered for her
wonderful sense of humor, her distinctive singing style, and
her love of family and friends.
No
immediate services are planned, but a celebration of her life
will be held at a later date.
