Web
site aims to out companies that allegedly hire
illegal immigrants

“We
get threats every once in a while,” said Jason
Mrochek, a California‑based immigration
reform activist whose Web site names companies
suspected of hiring illegal immigrants.
The
Web site, Wehirealiens .com, alleges that approximately
200 Arizona employers hire illegal immigrants.
Of those, the site lists 10 in Scottsdale, three
businesses and one church in Cave Creek, and one
North Phoenix business located along Black Canyon
Highway.
The
allegations are strictly hearsay, posted by anonymous
self‑described former employees in some
cases.
Mrochek
said he isn’t worried about getting sued.
“It’s
not intended to be a court and judge and jury,”
he said. Mrochek likened the Web site to private
citizens merely taking down the license number
of a suspicious vehicle or the description of
a suspicious person and turning that information
over to police.
The
legal disclaimer on the site states: “The companies
and employers contained on this Web site are officially
listed as ‘alleged’ violators of immigration,
tax and labor laws. We are not attempting to malign
anyone. We only wish to encourage employers to
be patriots. Any employer who wishes to have their
information removed from the site may request
it by contacting us.”
Established
in 2005, the Internet site is part of the FIRE
Coalition (Federal Immigration Reform and Enforcement),
a grass roots group that wants Congress to crack
down on illegal immigration by going after employers
who hire illegal immigrants.
“Obviously,
to us, the magnet that allows illegal immigration
is the employer. ... We want to demagnetize it,”
Mrochek said in a telephone interview with The
Desert Advocate.
Mrochek
believes the site has helped federal authorities
crack down on employers who hire illegal immigrants.
However, he does not have hard numbers to prove
this claim.
The
site lists contact information for U.S. Immigration
and Customs Enforcement.
In
addition, the Web site also lists what the reform
group considers “Patriot Employers,” meaning those
companies that do not hire illegal immigrants.
Not
a single Arizona‑based business is listed
in this category.
