NEW
RIVER /BLACK CANYON CITY – The state transportation
department is asking for public input on possible
alternatives to widening Interstate 17 between
New River and Cordes Junction.
One
public meeting was held Jan. 23 at the Canon School
gymnasium in Black Canyon City. A second meeting
for additional comments will take place from 6‑7:30
p.m. Jan. 25 at the Mayer High School multipurpose
room, 17300 E. Mule Deer Dr. in Spring Valley.
The
Arizona Department of Transportation and the Federal
Highway Administration are beginning the process
of looking at alternatives to the widening of
I‑17 between the New River interchange and
Cordes Junction interchange, according to a department
press release.
ADOT
spokesman Bill Pederson said, however, that although
the government is required to look at alternatives,
the rugged terrain really makes alternative routes
impractical. Adding another general‑purpose
lane in both directions remains the most likely
resolution.
“Widening
the interstate between Black Canyon City and Sunset
Point would be very difficult and costly,” Pederson
said, adding that widening I‑17 in that
area is not scheduled in the current five‑year
plan. “Most likely it will be quite a few years
down the road before ADOT widens that segment.”
The
format calls for ADOT representatives to be on
hand at both meetings to listen to the public,
answer questions and provide information. The
department’s Jan. 25 presentation begins at 6
p.m., followed by public comment.
