may be purchased during school as well as the night of

Desert
Sage Elementary School kicks off their 3rd Annual Carol
Gearhart Read‑A‑Thon on Feb. 16 with the Desert
Sage Chorus performing at Barnes & Noble Booksellers
in Phoenix, located at Interstate 17 and Happy Valley
Road. Choral performance starts at 5:30. p.m. In addition,
Desert Sage student artwork will be on display from Feb.16‑25.

Peak Elementary School officially kicked off their Jump
Rope for Heart fundraiser for the American Heart Association.
Students will participate in a jump rope contest on Feb
14. The school goal is $50,000 with various incentives
for students and classrooms that participate.

Counts! walks scheduled for March 4
Members
of the New River Elementary community will be participating
in the Character Counts! Challenge. This six‑kilometer
walk, sponsored by the Arizona Character Education Foundation,

Goldwater High School Debate team members to go to semi‑finals
and finals
Barry
Goldwater HS Speech and Debate team competed in the 8th
annual Bobcat Bonanza Tournament on Feb. 2‑3 at
Central High School in Phoenix. Competing against 32 schools
statewide, two BGHS team members made it into the semi‑finals
and/or finals. Lily Dodge placed 4th overall in the Impromptu
Speaking finals. Sonya Dosad made it to the semi‑finals
in storytelling.

Creek High Academic Decathlon team wins silver, bronze
awards
Boulder
Creek High School Academic Decathlon team took three silvers,
two bronze and Rookie of the Year honors at the Region
2 Arizona Academic Decathlon on Feb.2‑3. Out of
50,000 total scoring points, BCHS team scored 32,153,
which qualified the nine‑member team for state competition.
Taking individual awards at the Academic Decathlon were
Elissa Thomas, Silver Art Honors, Elissa Thomas, Silver
Art Overall, John Doyle, Bronze Music Scholastic, Scott
Berlin, Silver Interview Scholastic; and Katrina L. Vargas,
Bronze Interview Scholastic. Academic Decathlon is an
honors level class for grades 10, 11 and 12.

Creek student musicians earn Superior ranks from state
association
Boulder
Creek HS students Eric Heater, Cherise Sheperd, Pat James
Jr. and Brennen Westermeyer received a Superior rating
for their guitar ensemble at the recent Arizona Music
Educators Association regional competition. At the same
competition Michelle Liu was awarded a Superior rating
for her piano performance. Students are under the direction
of Mitch McDermott, Boulder Creek HS choir and guitar
teacher.

Springs Elementary students take top honors in spelling
bee
Canyon
Springs held their 1st school‑wide (4th‑7th
grade) Spelling Bee on Jan. 11. Samantha Perry took first
place with Rebekah Martin as runner‑up. Both girls
advanced to the district level spelling bee on Jan. 25.
Samantha Perry placed 3rd at the District Spelling Bee
and represented DVUSD at the Regional Spelling Bee on
Feb. 12.
District
debuts new Web site
Cave
Creek Unified School District unveiled its new Web site
located at the same address of www.ccusd93.org, as stated
in the district press release.
The
Web site was redesigned as a result of increased communication
efforts and a governing board goal of a “comprehensive
communication plan and process that provides for dialogue
among all district stakeholders.” The Web site will continuously
expand with teachers creating and maintaining Web pages
with calendar events, homework, newsletters and current
information as a vehicle for consistent communication.
District pages will be updated daily with current news.
The site will feature a monthly letter from Superintendent
Dr. Tacy Ashby and a section entitled “Just the Facts”
that will be used to help dispel any rumors and misinformation
that may be out in the schools and community. Also included
will be clearly defined areas of current information for
parents, staff, community members and students.
CSHS
literary magazine receives an excellent rating
The
National Council of Educators in English Studies, Literacy
and Language Arts has given Cactus Shadows High School’s
literacy magazine, A Word Fondue, a rating of excellent
in their program to recognize excellence in student literacy
magazines. A total of 497 schools nationwide entered the
program and seven were ranked from Arizona. Student editors
Jamahl Valentine, Julianna Bowie, and faculty advisor
Lori Hart are given congratulations from school officials
