Former CSHS students receive scholarship funds

NORTH VALLEY – Three recent graduates of Cactus Shadows High School have qualified for renewed scholarship funding from the Devon Ann Sweeney Foundation.

Kasey Odell, a second year student at Arizona State University majoring in psychology, has been awarded $2,000 by the foundation. Kasey is the daughter of Kathy Odell, of Scottsdale.

Alicia Ortega is a junior at the University of Arizona majoring in molecular and cellular biology.

The daughter of David and Kay Ortega of Cave Creek, Alicia has been awarded $3,000 toward her continued education.

Jason Beazley is currently working toward a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in political theory at ASU. He has been awarded $4,000 from the foundation. He is the son of Jackie and Skot Beazley of Carefree.

Since its founding, the DAS foundation has awarded nine high school students a total of $27,000. In October of 1995 Devon Sweeney, 13, of Cave Creek, was killed in a car accident involving six teenagers on their way home from a Foothills Academy function.

Her parents, Mark Sweeney and De Reichenbach, established the DAS Foundation in their daughter’s memory.

Due to the community support and generosity, the DAS Foundation was able to award its first scholarship only seven months after Devon’s death.

Applications for the 2007 award are available from the CSHS guidance offices. Any graduating senior who plans to attend a four‑year college or university and lives in the Desert Foothills can apply.
