2nd
Kiwanis science fair triples entries
The
number of students competing in the Kiwanis Community
Science Fair this year has nearly tripled and so have
the number of entries, the Kiwanis club announced.
The
first science fair in this area was held in March 2006
with 515 Cave Creek Unified School District students
from kindergarten through 8th grade working on a combined
total of 270 science projects.
In
this second year, over 1,400 students from grades K‑12
have submitted applications for more than 650 science
projects. The projects were to be on display at the
Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center, however, the facility
does not have sufficient space for the number of projects.
As a result, organizers established a two‑tier
system for judging the projects at each school in the
district to determine qualifiers for the final District
Fair.
Kiwanis
judges will score the 650 projects and the top percentage
of entries from each school will be invited to compete
at the 2007 Kiwanis Community Science Fair to be held
on March 12‑14.
An
open house for parents, teachers, students and the public
will be held on March 14 and the awards ceremony will
be held at 5 p.m. that day.
Judges
will present gold, silver, bronze and honorable mention
medals. The gold medal winners will get a $50 first‑prize
award. Other prizes include plaques for the winning
class projects, and trophies for “Best of Show” budding
scientists. All students whose projects “graduate” to
Tier 2 at the FAC will also be awarded a Science Fair
T‑Shirt.
The
organizers are members of the Science Education Committee
of Kiwanis Club of Carefree partnered with the science
teachers of the region’s schools.
