Children's program issued cease and desist order
Kids given quarters to buy snacks from community center vending machines
by Kathleen Stinson

ANTHEM – The Maricopa County Environmental Services Department issued a cease and desist order to an after‑school program at the Anthem Community Center.

According to the county Web site report dated Jan. 12, Anthem Community Center’s after‑school program was serving foods without a permit. Also noted was the presence of chafing dishes and water coolers and the absence of hand wash sinks or ware washing sinks.

The county ordered the center to cease and desist food service immediately until plans have been submitted to MCESD and proper permits have been obtained.

Steve Peterman, executive director of the Anthem Community Associations, said the cease and desist order relates to a small after‑school program at the center and has nothing to do with the center snack bar or concession stand.

Peterman said the center is in the process of giving the county blueprints to obtain the proper permit.

In the meantime, the children receive quarters to purchase juice and snacks from the vending machines Peterman said.
