Pancake Breakfast to benefit Camp Courage

The Carefree/Cave Creek Rotary Club is sponsoring a Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser from 9 a.m.‑1 p.m. on March 4 at the Rural Metro Cave Creek  Fire Station.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Camp Courage, the Arizona Children’s Burn Camp. Located in the Prescott National Forest, Camp Courage is a nonprofit camp for burn survivors ages 6‑15.

Cost for the breakfast is a $10 minimum donation. The Cave Creek fire station is located at 37402 N. Cave Creek Rd. in Cave Creek. For information, call (480)‑980‑3106.

Posh pet resort celebrates grand opening

Sonoran Desert Pet Resort will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday, March 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.at the facility located at 42323 N. Vision Way in Anthem. The event will showcase the indoor dog park,  11 condos, 44 suites, and 17 rooms. Each room has TVs while each suite has its own orthopedic bed and stainless bowls. There will be free Iams dental treats and Frisbees. Autozone will have a BBQ and Mobile 1 and Rick Halls Ultimate Imports will also hold an open house. For more information, call (623) 551‑5299.

Sunset Ridge PTSO meeting

The Sunset Ridge PTSO meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on March 6 at the Sunset Ridge Library.

In addition, the Sunset Ridge PTSO Buy One, Get One Free Spring Book Fair is scheduled for March 5‑9, also at the library. The hours of the fair run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. each day.

Arizona 3‑day breast cancer walk orientation meeting March 7

To learn more about the 2007 Arizona 3‑Day Breast Cancer Walk to be held Nov. 2‑4, an orientation meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m., March 7, at the Anthem Community Center.

The orientation meeting is a fun, informative way for people to hear about and register for the 3‑Day Walk. The AZ 3‑Day Coaches will answer questions about the event and attendees can meet members of Team W.I.S.H. (Walking In Spirit and Hope) who have participated in the event.

Knights of Columbus holds Awards Ceremony

Annunciation Assembly #2833 of the Knights of Columbus held its First Annual “Law & Honor Awards Dinner” on January 27 at Our Lady of Joy Church Hall in Carefree.

Deputy Richard Bricklin of Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office received the Police Officer of the Year award which was presented to him by Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Captain Barry Roska.

Firefighter and paramedic awards went to Spencer Peters and Charles Mathews, respectively, of Rural Metro Fire and were presented by their Battalion Chief, John Kraetz.

These awards are based upon the unselfish acts of public servants. The three award‑winners were involved in the rescue of an elderly lady who was missing for three days, after she was found in her vehicle hanging off the side of a cliff. 

The final award of the evening went to Spec 4 Jesse Ede U.S. Army, representing all of those that place themselves in harm’s way to protect our country and liberties. Presenting the award to Jesse, who received two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star was Colonel William Pokorny, U.S. Army, retired. Jesse was hit by two roadside bombs and pulled an injured fellow soldier from direct fire.

First ‘Laura’s Run’ takes place March 11

The first annual “Laura’s Run,” in memory of the late Laura Burdick will commence on March 11 at 9 a.m. at the Cap Basin Sports Complex in North Scottsdale. All proceeds generated from “Laura’s Run” will benefit the Laura Burdick Foundation, supporting programs for the families and recipients of the innovative lung transplant operation at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Those who register for the run will receive a free First Annual “Laura’s Run” T‑shirt and a chance to win many great raffle prizes for their $25 donation to participate. Prizes will be awarded to top male and female runners in each age group. The course will consist of a 5K walk/run, and a kids dash. Participants can register for the run online at active.com or arizonarunningevents.com. On‑site registration is also available at Cap Basin Sports Complex beginning at 8 a.m. on race day, which is located at 8081 E. Princess Dr., in Scottsdale on the northeast corner of Bell and Hayden Roads.

In addition to raising awareness and proceeds, “Laura’s Run” will celebrate the life of Laura Burdick who was a recipient of a lung transplant in 2003, but lost her courageous battle in 2005.

North Maricopa Democrats meet

The North Maricopa Democratic Club will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 13 at 7 p.m. at the library, located at the Boulder Creek High School campus on Gavilan Peak Parkway.

Five $5,000 cash prizes will be awarded on March 26 at el Pedregal.

Peoria celebrates the arts

The City of Peoria’s Celebration of the Arts sponsored by Washington Mutual takes place on the grounds of the Peoria City Hall Municipal Complex on Friday, March 16, from 5‑10 p.m. and Saturday, March 17, from 10 a.m.‑4 p.m.

The festival will showcase a dynamic collection of fine art exhibited and available for purchase.  In addition, a delicious variety of culinary treats and wine tastings will be available.  Library Fest will celebrate books and reading with several activities.  There also will be live entertainment. Movie lovers can view an award‑winning local independent film with a question and answer session with the director on Friday night. 

Peoria City Hall is located at 8401 W. Monroe St. Parking and admission are free.
