Desert Arroyo girls take state
CAVE CREEK – Two years and counting.

The Desert Arroyo eighth‑grade girls basketball team claimed the Arizona state championship Feb. 21 with a 30‑16 win over Keyenta, extending their streak of two years without a loss.

The girls, who had already won the conference Jan. 27 with a 47‑14 victory over Sonoran Trails Middle School, went 4‑0 in the state tournament and ended a three‑year winning streak for a team from Fort Defiance in  the process.

Desert Arroyo routed Herrera 67‑7 in the first round, then walloped Cholla 56‑7 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Desert Arroyo nipped Fort Defiance’s Tse Ho Tso team 39‑33 to stop their opponent’s streak while maintaining their run.

Team members include Gracie Goulder, Beau Bremer, Alexa Bierl, Elyssa Hartsock, Morgan Richardson, Shan England, Rebecca Wilbanks, Kara Curley, Summer Anderson, Lauren Lazo, Kaitlin Accola and Olivia Slack.

Tifani Wendt was the team’s coach.
