ANTHEM
– Gavilan Peak Elementary School will host a charity basketball
game next week to raise funds for the family of a student
and girls basketball player who died last weekend.
Avian
Allen, who died of unspecified causes, was a seventh‑grade
player for Gavilan Peak. The school, which held a memorial
service Feb. 26, is scheduling a charity games at 6:30 p.m.
March 7 at Boulder Creek High School.
The
undefeated Gavilan Peak boys basketball team, which is the
defending state champions, will take on the men faculty of
Gavilan Peak, while the girls team will face the Gavilan women
faculty.
Entry
fee is $1 and there will be a raffle and concessions. All
proceeds will be donated to Allen’s family.
Wolf
Howl volleyball to host 2 local teams
NORTH
VALLEY – The boys volleyball teams from Boulder Creek and
Sandra Day O’Connor start their season’s this week and will
be part of the Chandler Wolf Howl Invitational.
The
two North Valley schools are among the eight‑team field,
which will fight it out for the championship in two pools
at Chandler High School.
Pool
play games begin at 8 a.m. March 3 with each team facing three
teams each. Boulder Creek and O’Connor, which are in the same
pool, will square off in the first game of the day. Bracket
play will determine the overall winner at the end of the day.
Chandler
High School is at 350 N. Arizona Ave.
Tournaments
on tap to start spring seasons
NORTH
VALLEY – Local high school baseball and softball teams will
also see action in tournaments during their first week of
action.
Cactus
Shadows is traveling to Tucson for a three‑day baseball
tournament, while Boulder Creek and Sandra Day O’Connor’s
softball teams will head south for their tournaments.
O’Connor’s
baseball team will continue play in the Aztec Baseball Classic
at Corona del Sol High School in Tempe. The tournament was
staged over two weekends.
Other
highlights of the weekend include O’Connor at the Paradise
Valley Relays at Paradise Valley High School Feb. 2‑3.
