NORTH
VALLEY – The state championships are far in the distance,
but Sandra Day O’Connor’s track and field teams saw a mix
of quality competition from across at the state at last
week’s North Canyon Invitational.
The
Eagles’ girls team took fifth at the March 10 event, while
the boys finished 11th.
As
usual, O’Connor runners dominated the girls distance events.
Defending state champion Lindsay Prescott won the 1,600
meters with a time of 5:02.98, which was five seconds better
than a pair of Xavier runners who finished second and third.
Prescott’s teammate, Camille Olson, took fourth at 5:12.52.
Aliena
Eisenhauer, who was part of the state championship cross
country team with Prescott and Olson, took second in the
800 with a time of 2:24.95. O’Connor’s Mackenzie Baksh finished
sixth in the 400 with a time of 1:04.02.
Nicole
Elliot highlighted O’Connor’s performance in the field events.
Elliot won the shot put with a toss of 39‑9.25.
For
the Eagles’ boys team, Jeffery Marquez turned in a solid
showing in the 400 with a third‑place finish (52.07).
Also, Chad Clark placed in the 110‑meter hurdles with
an eighth‑place time of 15.98.
In
the field events, Brandon Townsend scored points in two
events as he took second in the discus (144 feet, 9 inches)
and fifth in the shot put (43‑3.50). Oliver Penalba
took sixth in the long jump with a leap of 20‑1.
