B.C. volleyball perfect at tourney
by Jason Stone

ANTHEM – The playoffs are still a long way off, but Boulder Creek’s boys volleyball team certainly looked in postseason form last week at the Mountain View Tournament in Marana.

The Jaguars rolled to the title with a 5‑0 record, including wins over Tucson, Buena, host Marana, Palo Verde (Nev.) and Mesquite. Boulder Creek (13‑3 overall) lost only one set in the tournament, which was a best‑of‑three format.

Boulder Creek’s showing helped the Jaguars carry a nine‑match winning streak into spring break. The Jags won’t play another game until March 27 at St. Mary’s. The team will then begin Northwest Region play March 29 at home against Deer Valley.

Goldwater (0‑5) and O’Connor (2‑7) are also off for spring break and will return to action next week.

TENNIS

Jaguars girls tennis continues to shine

ANTHEM – Boulder Creek’s girls tennis team continued its early‑season success with wins over North Canyon and Deer  Valley last week. The Jaguars (9‑1 overall) won six of the nine matches against North Canyon and won all but one against Deer Valley.

Boulder Creek, Goldwater (3‑6, 0‑2) and O’Connor (5‑3, 0‑2) continue region play through April 5.

In 5A boys tennis, Boulder Creek went 2‑1 in region matches last week. The Jags beat O’Connor and Deer Valley but lost to North Canyon.

In 4A tennis, Cactus Shadows’ boys team improved to 2‑0 in the Wells Fargo 2 Region with          back‑to‑back wins over Mingus (5‑4) and Sunnyslope (7‑2). The Falcons girls split their matches, beating Mingus, but  losing to Sunnyslope.

NORTH VALLEY – O’Connor’s boys and girls track teams each finished second out of three teams March 14 in a meet at Mountain Ridge. The Eagles boys lost to the host team 101‑49, but beat third‑place North Canyon 49‑28.

In the girls’ competition, Mountain Ridge won with 95 points, followed by O’Connor (77) and North Canyon (four).
