benefit cookoff

Desert Foothills - The PTO at Cactus Shadows High School doesn't
fool around when it comes to fundraisers. Members have been successful
in raising thousands of dollars in one night, and plan to do it
all over again on April Fool's Day.
The PTO will host a chili cookoff and raffle with proceeds funding
CSHS campus improvements.
The cookoff promises to be a hot contest between parents, teachers,
administrators and community members whose chili recipes will be
judged on six features including aroma, consistency and name. Margot
Preston won last year for her pot of "Falcon Fire."
Award categories include People's Choice and the Judge's Choice,
with winners earning a trophy and raffle ticket. Grand prize for
the raffle is a new Chevy HHR. Miscellaneous prizes for the runners
up include cash awards up to $1,500 and other items.
Cactus Shadows students and faculty benefit from the event's proceeds,
as the PTO supports teacher grants and student clubs, and funds
from last year's inaugural chili cookoff helped finance the cafeteria's
remodeling. This year's funds are marked for facility improvements.
"We're looking at expanding the paved areas (of campus) and
more seating for students," said PTO Vice President Nicola
Morton. She explained that the school expects 200 more students
next year and the PTO wants to ensure students have places to sit
during breaks and lunch.
The cookoff and raffle will be held April 1 from 7 to 10 p.m. at
the Buffalo Chip Saloon & Steakhouse, 6811 E. Cave Creek Road.
Chili contestants should arrive by 6:30 p.m. Admission is $5 per
person, which includes dinner, drinks and live entertainment. Raffle
tickets are $20 each, three for $50 or seven for $100.
