Atria
and courtyards bring the outside in
by RaeAnne Marsh
Nestled against northern foothills a few miles west of Interstate
17, Canyon's Edge at Sonoran Mountain lives up to its name
as it stretches north from Jomax Road and 67th Avenue. Homes
back up to open space either against the dedicated East Wing
Mountain
Preserve or open space washes.
A gated community of 58 homes, Canyon's Edge is divided into
lots ranging from approximately 12,000 square feet to just
over a half acre. There are six models, ranging from a 3,158
square foot three bedroom with two and a half bathrooms to
a 4,566 square foot four bedroom with three and a half bathrooms.
Builder Camelot Homes designates its models by number rather
than name, as it offers each in distinctly different elevations:
Early California, Tuscany and French. Each evokes the setting
of its name through the shape and treatment of windows, eaves
and use of stone. Most models feature an atrium or a sheltered
courtyard around which the home is built, a view which can
be enjoyed from the many rooms surrounding it. Eight foot
high doors and proportionately high ceilings contribute to
the sense of spaciousness throughout the floor plans.
Model 80 3, the smallest at Canyon's Edge, features a private
front courtyard that lies behind an entry tower facing the
street. From the courtyard, entry to the house is gained at
nearly exact center, through the front door that opens into
a spacious foyer. Optional is another entrance-with double
doors replacing the standard windows-into a bedroom wing,
facing a "teen room" (or optional fourth bedroom)
located between two bedrooms. A tech center is built into
an alcove in this bedroom wing. The front bedroom features
an alcove between two corner closets, with a window facing
streetside-an inviting spot for a window seat.
The master suite lies along the row of bedrooms comprising
one axis of the home, but has its own hallway entrance from
the foyer. Its bedroom and bathroom actually open separately
off this "master" hallway, so lights or running
water in the bathroom are unlikely to disturb a person in
the bedroom. His and hers closets flank the bathroom's entry,
with a soaking tub invitingly showcased straight ahead between
two separate sinks. The commode is to one side, snail shower
to the other, and there is a separate counter vanity area.
The bedroom itself, at the rear of the house and with its
own door to the patio, features a sitting area in a wide,
bowed nook that looks out onto the backyard.
Another bowed expanse of window is found at one side of the
living room where the wall's curve helps define boundaries
of the adjacent dining room. Windows line the entire back
wall, with a view of the backyard beyond the covered patio.
The dining room also enjoys a view on its other side of the
small kitchen terrace. The kitchen is fully open to the living
room at one side, with a sense of doorway created by the arch
that drops from the ceiling and spans the opening.
On the opposite side of the kitchen from the living room,
a doorway leads to one of the home's distinctive features:
a large, breakfast "nook" that is, essentially,
a separate room. Windows line the wall that curves out into
the home's front courtyard, and a door to that courtyard is
an option available to homebuyers.
On some lots, this home is available with an additional 541
square feet as a carriage house above the garage.
Plan 80 5 is available as both a single story and a two story,
the second floor adding two bedrooms and a large game room
to the floor plan. It is built around a central courtyard
atrium that can be enjoyed from many of the rooms, including
the upstairs game room. The dining room has a straight on
view into the atrium, and to the far wall where a homeowner
may choose to add a fireplace. From the dining room centered
on this side of the house to the kitchen in the rear is one
of the unique features of this model: the butler's pantry
hallway with a long serving counter across one wall as well
as upper and lower cabinets. |

Unique
design elements are found in each model. One of the most stunning
is the master bedroom suite of model 80 2. In this 4,566 square
foot, two story house, a full half of the second floor is taken
up by the master, and a good portion of that is closet. Stairs near
the downstairs family room climb to one side of the second floor,
with a bonus room on one side and two smaller bedrooms on the other-and,
straight ahead, the huge master closet separated into halves by
a built in set of shelves extending into the middle of the space.
From each side, a door opens into the bathroom, with his and hers
sinks across from each other and a low vanity counter at one end
of the room. Soaking tub and shower are located against a central
wall, with a window over the tub that looks out to the master bedroom's
very private deck set within the roofline at the back of the house.
An anteroom just outside the bedroom, which can be used as an office,
is the landing for a second set of stairs from the
lower floor, these originating next to the dining room.
This model features distinct dining and living rooms in addition
to the great room that flows from kitchen to family room. And the
great room includes a more casual eating area in a distinctive space
in the great room: against a circular wall whose windowed curve
bows into the patio, the entire circular space defined by the coffered
ceiling above it.
Models for Canyon's Edge may be visited at Camelot Homes' nearby
Altamont at WestWing Mountain, near 86th Avenue and WestWing Mountain
Parkway in Peoria (623) 572 6772.
