Eagles
reach semis of own tournament
Local
teams returning to region play after spring tourneys
by Jason Stone
NORTH
VALLEY – Sandra Day O’Connor’s successful start to the 2007
season continued last week when the Eagles battled the rain
to reach the semifinals of the Deer Valley‑Sandra
Day O’Connor Softball Festival.
The
Eagles lost to Xavier 4‑3 in the semifinals but still
showed some promise playing against a field stacked with
talented teams across the state. O’Connor (12‑4) beat
Basha 6‑1 to open pool play March 22, but lost to
Corona del Sol 5‑1 later in the day.
The
Eagles return to Northwest Region action this week with
a March 27 game against Boulder Creek that was played past
press time. It’s the team’s only game this week.
Boulder
Creek back to Northwest
Region play
ANTHEM
– The “real” season begins this week for the Boulder Creek
softball team.
The
Jaguars begin the final stretch of 2007 with nothing but
Northwest Region games the rest of the way. After playing
in the O’Connor Festival last week, the Jags returned to
league play this week at O’Connor (March 27), and were scheduled
to host Trevor Browne March 30.
A
scheduling quirk has the Jaguars needing region wins early
if they want to advance to the 5A‑II state tournament.
Boulder Creek plays its final five region games on the road
April 18‑26.
Five
of their first six region games were played at home.
Goldwater
part of Horizon
Tournament
NORTH
VALLEY – Goldwater takes a break from region play this week
to play in the Horizon Tournament. The Bulldogs (1‑7‑1)
overall, 0‑2 region) will be back in league play April
2 at O’Connor.
Young
Falcons ready to
face region foes
CAVE
CREEK – Danica Gianni’s young Cactus Shadows team is preparing
for a long stretch of Wells Fargo 2 Region games as the
second season starts.
The
Falcons, who are coming off a tough stretch of games in
the O’Connor tournament, play Bradshaw Mountain twice next
week and have a trio of consecutive road games April 5‑9. Cactus Shadows is 1‑2 in
Wells Fargo games.
