Up,
down week for Falcons
by Jason Stone
CCUSD - It's been a roller coaster season for the Cactus Shadows
softball team in 2006. So there was no reason last week should
have been any different.
The Falcons watched one of their pitchers dominate on the
mound in one game, only to have her get injured in another.
Ericka Cedarstrom fanned 11 batters and walked only two in
a 10 0 shutout of Washington March 27. But a day later at
Notre Dame, Cedarstrom badly sprained the arch of her foot,
forcing her to leave early in the Falcons' 4 0 loss. |

Coach
Danica Gianni said Cedarstrom will not play this week, leaving the
work to Nikki Horton. The junior Horton struck out 12 batters in
the March 30 home rematch against Notre Dame, but her eight walks
helped contribute to a 7 3 loss, which left the Falcons 1 2 in the
Wells Fargo 2 Region and 2 10 overall entering the week.
"Things are looking up, although the record doesn't show it,"
Gianni said. "We are starting to hit."
Runs have been at a premium for the Falcons, who have been shutout
in half their games this season. But that was not the case against
Washington when they took out a season full of frustration against
the Rams.
Cactus Shadows pounded out nine hits as Cedarstrom went 2 for 4
with a double and first baseman Haley Romero went 2 for 3 with a
double. Tera Bronis, who Gianni said is now the team's permanent
catcher, was a perfect 2 for 2.
After being held to only one hit in the first loss to Notre Dame,
Cactus Shadows roped out 14 hits in the rematch, but couldn't convert
more than three into runs. Bronis went 2 for 4, Horton was 3 for
4, shortstop Lindsay Miller was 3 for 4 and sophomore newcomer Alli
Bernard went 2 for 3.
Cactus Shadows will try to gain some momentum this week with three
key region games. The Falcons were scheduled to face Bradshaw Mountain
twice in a home and home series and Sunnyslope once.
"Now we need to put it all together to get the Ws," Gianni
said. |
