Boulder
Creek tennis netting big victories
DVUSD - Like
many teams at Boulder Creek, somebody forgot to tell the Jaguars'
girls tennis team that it's supposed to play like a first year
school.
The Jaguars are in the midst of their first full season at varsity,
but you'd never know it by their 11 1 start. Boulder Creek swept
Trevor Browne and Goldwater last week to win their seventh and
eighth straight matches.
The Jaguars won 9 0 over Goldwater and only lost one forfeited
match against Trevor Browne when No. 2 doubles player Megan Flittie
couldn't continue because of back spasms. Vanessa Green, Hannah
Townsend, Daishawna Matthews, Meredith Clark, Kalyn Schmidt and
Flittie all earned wins last week.
As a team, Boulder Creek's only loss this season came Feb. 23
to Desert Mountain, the No. 1 ranked team in 5A Division II.
The Jaguars' boys also did their parts last week, winning both
of their matches to even their record at 6 6. Winners included
Nick Smillie, Kenny Wong, Eddie Taylor, Brad Pinckney, Michael
Marston, Kyle Kelly, Tom DeMott and Carl Dewberry.
Both teams were expected to play Mountain Ridge April 6, but the
girls match may be for the Northwest Region championship. Each
team played prior matches April 4, but results were unavailable
at press time.
FAST LITTLE
FRESHMAN
Give it up to Cactus Shadows freshman runner Natalie Omundson,
who won the Outstanding Performer Award at the Freshman Showcase
last week on campus. Omundson earned the honor at the prestigious
freshman meet by taking first in the 3,200 meters with a time
of 12 minutes, 30 seconds, second in the 1,600 at 5:36 and third
in the 800 in 2:33.
Other point scorers for the Falcons were Lacey Modzeleski, who
took sixth in the high jump, and Kyle Short, a fifth place finisher
in the 3,200.
"The weather was ideal and the volunteers were phenomenal,"
Cactus Shadows coach Patty Egan wrote in about the April 1 event.
"It was truly a community event, and the coaching staff would
like to thank everyone who made it possible."
LITTLE
LEAGUE SUPPORT
The High Desert Little League will host an event to honor its
sponsor, the Daisy Mountain Veterans, April 6 at the Boulder Creek
High School
library.
League coach Ed Barans said sponsorship is key for the league
because it has to pay to use fields owned by Pulte Homes, unlike
many little leagues, which use their own fields.
"A lot of people think Del Webb (Pulte) gives us the use
of the fields from the goodness of their hearts," Barans
said. "We have to rent those fields, so we want the Daisy
Mountain Veterans to know how much we appreciate them."
Activities will begin at 7 p.m.
NICE PICKS,
BUDDY
Not that anybody was checking, but I got absolutely one Final
Four pick correct. Then again, that might be one more than most
people after this tournament that was truly "madness."
I picked UCLA to go all the way, and the Bruins almost did. Florida?
Um, let's just say I didn't have them lasting very long in the
tournament.
