Canines and cabernet mix for Foothills fundraiser

DESERT FOOTHILLS – North Valley residents Lisa Newcomb and Lucy Bixler make a difference providing foster homes for large breed dogs.

Newcomb and Bixler are part of a small group of Arizona Labrador & Giant Breed Rescue Inc. foster home volunteers in the Phoenix area. ALGBR is a charitable 501 (c)3 that operates solely from donations.

“We never have enough foster homes,” Newcomb said.

In one story of many, Newcomb recently took in an 11-month-old Labrador named Lucan. The family who owned the dog could no longer care for the animal. She will provide foster care until a permanent home can be found.

“I just love the Labrador breed. They’re just good family pets. They always make me laugh,” Newcomb said. “Lucan is a great dog, very energetic, perfect for a high-energy household that likes to go camping and do outdoor activities.”

Tatum Ranch resident Lucy Bixler and her nine-year-old son, Rees, are providing a foster home for three dogs–two Labradors and one Springer Spaniel.

After their dog passed away, Rees wanted to have a mother dog that gave birth to puppies, but the prospect of keeping 12 puppies was too much. She decided to ask ALGBR if the organization needed a foster home for any pregnant dogs. A short time later, the opportunity arose for them to take care of a pregnant dog.

The family kept a puppy, while the remainder of the litter was adopted. The Bixlers continue to provide foster care for ALGBR.

“It’s really fun. My son and I do this together. We love animals,” Lucy said.

ALGBR takes in shelter dogs about to be euthanised, and animals who need a home for a profusion of reasons.

“Sometimes they lose their home because the owner gets too old or sick to care for the dog,” she said.

Before putting the dog up for adoption, a veterinarian updates the dog’s shots, checks out its health, and embeds it with a micro-chip for identity protection.

The all volunteer organization maintains a Web site, Azlabsandgiants.org, where photos and profiles of the dogs appear for those interested in adopting an animal.

ALGBR is holding a fundraiser wine tasting from noon to 3 p.m., April 14, at Vino 100 in Tuscany Village Center, 30835 N. Cave Creek Rd., Phoenix. The suggested donation is $10 per person. Free chair massages will be provided by Healthy Images, according to the group’s press release.

The group is holding the DC Ranch Adoptathon from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. April 21 at Market Street Park at Thompson Peak Parkway and Pima Road. All dogs who need a home will be available to meet potential owners.

“The more we can save these dogs and find them a forever home (the better),” Newcomb said.

ALGBR re-homes such large breeds as Labradors, Great Danes, Mastiffs, Great Pyrenees, Elkhounds, Newfoundlands, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Saint Bernards, Irish Wolfhounds, and Deer Hounds.
