Women riders enjoy the trails

NORTH VALLEY – Carrying on the tradition of horse and rider, the women of the Painted Ponies Riding Club spend one morning a week riding North Valley desert trails, followed by a luncheon at a local restaurant.

“I couldn’t survive without riding. It takes the stress of daily life away,” said Jane Baare, Moon Valley resident and club member.

“Nothing is more freeing than when you are on a horse–if only for a short while you get away from this cell phone-computer-ridden living, back to ground zero and what’s important,” said Leigh Barthen of New River.

The 15-member group, ranging in age from 16 to 67, formed in 2002 with two members. The club grew from there.

The women exchange pointers on horses and riding, and some women have learned to ride largely after joining the club. The club also serves as a social outlet.

During the leisurely pace on the trail, the women get a chance to visit. They celebrate each other’s birthdays at lunch and hold a big Christmas party each year at a member’s house.

“It’s something I look forward to–being with these women each week,” said New River resident Jill Young.

“We enjoy each other’s company and the hobby of riding,” said Marilyn McDaniel of New River. “We get out and enjoy the beauty of the Sonoran Desert we want to preserve.”

Ann Jones said she got into horse riding later in life, after her husband was diagnosed with cancer.

Desert Hills resident Marianne Irving said horses are therapeutic.

“They mirror us and we learn so much about ourselves riding,” Irving said. “You’re able to process your feelings when you are around horses. If you’re stressed out, the horse will reflect that and you can learn to calm yourself down.”

Some members are riding in the Fiesta Days Parade and the club is planning some horseback camping trips this summer.

The club welcomes new members. For more information, call (623) 465-7107.
