Youth theater camp registration begins

ANTHEM – Students dreaming of the bright lights of the theater,  either on stage or behind the scenes, can learn tricks of the trade from seasoned theater professionals in June as Starlight Community Theater is currently registering youngsters ages 4‑18 for its first summer theater camp.

Camp Rising Star will take place from June 18 through 29 in Anthem. During the camp, students will be instructed in techniques involving acting, vocalization, dance and technical theater.

The first session, beginning June 18, will be held at Gavilan Peak  Elementary School.

The second week of camp, beginning June 25, will take place at Boulder Creek High School with a final performance at Boulder Creek Performing Arts Center main stage on June 30.

A morning session for students ages 7‑12 will run from 8:30‑11:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. The theme will be “Disney Stars” and favorite songs will be applied to dance, movement and theatrical  interpretation.

An afternoon session will be for students 13‑18 and will run from noon‑3 p.m. daily. The theme for the afternoon session will be “Monster Star Mania.” Favorite songs from movies and plays employing a monster element will be used.

A technical theater session is open to students 13‑18 who are interested in the behind‑the‑scenes aspect of the theatrical process. Lighting, sound and set design techniques will be covered in the technical classes.

The little ones ages 4‑6 will have an opportunity to get in on the act during the “Playing with Theater” sessions. The classes are open to children with siblings in the older sessions. A certified teacher will conduct the classes and snacks will be provided. The youngsters will perform a song and dance routine at the end of camp on June 30.

Camp directors are Mark Oesterle and Barbara Surloff. Both are board members of Starlight Theater and have extensive experience in theater production. Oesterle and Surloff have recruited other board members to assist in the camp.

Cost for the camp is $300 per student with a 20 percent sibling discount available.
