Red‑hot baseball Bulldogs show bite
by Jason Stone

NORTH VALLEY – Goldwater is making its move at just the right time.

The Bulldogs’ baseball team swept all three games it played last week–including two against Boulder Creek–to vault back into the thick of the 5A‑Division II playoff race.

Goldwater (13‑12 overall, 4‑5 Northwest Region) beat Boulder Creek 11‑2 (April 10) and 9‑6 (April 12), plus added a non‑region victory against Alhambra April 13 to vault to No. 10 in the 5A‑II power point standings. The top 16 teams qualify for state and are seeded according to power points.

The Bulldogs have been playing their best ball of the year ever since the Best of the West Tournament in mid‑March. Since March 17, the team is 9‑3, with five games remaining in the regular season.

Boulder Creek falls in power points

ANTHEM – Boulder Creek’s losses to Goldwater hurt the Jaguars in playoff points as they fell to 13th. The Jaguars (16‑15 overall, 4‑5 Northwest Region) have lost four of their last five games, but play three of the next four at home.

O’Connor still No. 1 in 5A despite loss

NORTH VALLEY – O’Connor kept its No. 1 state ranking despite a non‑region loss to No. 2‑ranked Desert Mountain. The Eagles (20‑4 overall, 7‑1 region) also shutout North Canyon 10‑0 last week to remain a half‑game behind Mountain Ridge in the Northwest Region standings.

Cactus Shadows loses to Notre Dame again

CAVE CREEK – If Cactus Shadows is to win the 4A‑Division II state championship again, the Falcons will have to do it from behind. The Falcons fell at Notre Dame April 13 for the third time this season, ending Cactus Shadows’ Wells Fargo 2 Region championship hopes.

Cactus Shadows (17‑5 overall, 6‑3 region) started the week with a big 14‑1 win at Washington April 12, but had the tables completely turned the next day at Notre Dame in a 15‑0 loss.

The Falcons will finish the regular season with non‑region games against Mingus and Saguaro this week, followed by three more region games prior to the playoffs.
