Tennis
teams head to state tournament
One
girls singles player and one boys doubles team
from Boulder Creek reached the finals of the
Northwest Region tournament last week.
Defending
girls singles champion Vanessa Green, who was
seeded third at this year’s event, lost in the
finals to unseeded Djanaef Wawrinka of North
Canyon, 5‑7, 6‑0, 6‑1. Green
had beaten No. 1 seed Hannah Adewumi in the
semifinals. Wawrinka reached the finals after
defeating Sandra Day O’Connor’s Page Oxford
in the other semifinal.
The
Jaguars’ No. 1 boys double team of Nick Smillie
and Eddie Taylor lost in the doubles finals
to a team from North Canyon, 6‑0, 6‑3.
Smillie and Taylor reached the finals after
beating teams from Mountain Ridge and O’Connor
in earlier rounds.
Both
Boulder Creek teams advanced to the 5A‑II
boys and girls team tournaments. The Jaguars
girls were seeded second and were scheduled
to face No. 15‑seed Goldwater in the first
round on April 16. Eighth‑seeded O’Connor’s
girls were scheduled to host No. 9 North in
the first round.
In
the boys tournament, Boulder Creek, the No.
6 seed hosted Kofa in the first round, while
No. 12 O’Connor was slated to play at No. 5
Marcos de Niza. Matches were played after press
time.
Winners
in both tournaments advance to the quarterfinals
at 3:30 p.m. on April 18. The finals are slated
for noon, April 24, at the Paseo Racquet Center.
THE
ANTHEM ROTARY is hoping golfers celebrate Cinco
de Mayo on the greens.
MidFirst
Bank is sponsoring the Rotary’s annual golf
tournament this year, which benefits the Anthem
Posse and other charities. This year’s event
will be held at noon, May 5, at the Persimmons
Course.
There
will be prizes for the top three teams, longest
drive, and closest to the hole. Additionally,
there will be a contest for a hole‑in‑one
on a designated hole for a chance to win a new
car, which is sponsored by Darren Flowers Family
Dentistry.
