Falcons boys track champs yet again

It’s a ritual of spring: Cactus Shadows boys track will win the region championship.

The Falcons did it again last week when they wrapped up their fourth straight crown at Greenway High School.

Patrick Cronin won the 3,200 meters, Eric Gorraiz became champion of the long jump, and 13 different individuals qualified in 10 different events for this week’s 4A‑Division II state meet in Mesa.

The Eagles girls, meanwhile, took second place and qualified 15 different athletes in 11 events for the state meet.

Sara Pages was one of the top athletes at the meet, winning individual championships in the 100, 200 and 400. Additionally, her time in the 200 set a school record. Natalie Omundson was a two‑time winner for the Falcons, claiming first in both distance events–the 1,600 and 3,200.

“It was an exciting evening full of great competition despite the swirling winds,” coach Patty Egan reported.

The boys who have qualified for state from Cactus Shadows include Cronin, Gorraiz, Kyle Short, Nick Zalewski, Keith Howell, Devin Zundell, Will  Bisbee, Carl Matthes,  Gus Meyers and the 4x100 relay team of Chris LaSita, Joshua Reece, Jeff Keys‑Glenne and Geoffrey Byers.

Girl qualifiers are Omundson, Pages, Sarah Kezele, Lacey Modzeleski, Sarah Hatcher, Katie Smith, Mary Brazil and relay runners Mackenzie Wadas, Noelle Crow, Alix Boisson, Paige Kratzke, Lyndsay Sothan, Marta Reichenbach, Becca Storck and Stephanie Light.

The 4A state meet is scheduled for May 9 and 12 at Mesa Community College. The 5A meet is May 10 and 12 at Glendale Community College.

THE STATE BOYS volleyball tournament got into full swing this week with the top 5A/4A‑Division II teams squaring off in first‑round matches May 8 that were played past press time.

Boulder Creek, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, was scheduled to host No. 15 Ironwood, while Sandra Day O’Connor, which sneaked in with the final seed, took on No. 1 Catalina Foothills.

Quarterfinals will be held at the sites of the higher seed May 10. The semifinals and championship will be played at Marana’s Mountain View High School on May 12. The semifinals are in the afternoon with the championship staged in the evening.

Boulder Creek enters the tournament with a 33‑6 record and had a much as a 19‑match winning streak during the regular season. O’Connor made the field despite an 8‑23 mark during the regular season.
