Falcons
boys track champs yet again
It’s
a ritual of spring: Cactus Shadows boys
track will win the region championship.
The
Falcons did it again last week when they
wrapped up their fourth straight crown at
Greenway High School.
Patrick
Cronin won the 3,200 meters, Eric Gorraiz
became champion of the long jump, and 13
different individuals qualified in 10 different
events for this week’s 4A‑Division
II state meet in Mesa.
The
Eagles girls, meanwhile, took second place
and qualified 15 different athletes in 11
events for the state meet.
Sara
Pages was one of the top athletes at the
meet, winning individual championships in
the 100, 200 and 400. Additionally, her
time in the 200 set a school record. Natalie
Omundson was a two‑time winner for
the Falcons, claiming first in both distance
events–the 1,600 and 3,200.
“It
was an exciting evening full of great competition
despite the swirling winds,” coach Patty
Egan reported.
The
boys who have qualified for state from Cactus
Shadows include Cronin, Gorraiz, Kyle Short,
Nick Zalewski, Keith Howell, Devin Zundell,
Will Bisbee, Carl Matthes, Gus Meyers
and the 4x100 relay team of Chris LaSita,

STATE BOYS volleyball tournament got
into full swing this week with the top 5A/4A‑Division
II teams squaring off in first‑round
matches May 8 that were played past press
time.

Creek, the No. 2 seed in the tournament,
was scheduled to host No. 15 Ironwood, while

the final seed, took on No. 1 Catalina Foothills.
