Rapid growth prompts quickened construction
by Jennifer Krahe

NORTH VALLEY – Dove Valley Road will connect to Interstate 17 fifteen years earlier than originally planned. Due to the cooperative efforts of the City of Phoenix, Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) and the Arizona Department of Transportation, an I‑17/ Dove Valley Road interchange and the widening of I‑17 from Loop 101 north to Carefree Highway will be completed concurrently and far ahead of schedule.

Ian Satter, spokes‑person for ADOT, cited “extensive communication” as the impetus for accelerating the time line of the project, deemed necessary to cope with rapid development and growing traffic congestion between Happy Valley Road and Carefree Highway.

“I am encouraged about MAG, ADOT and the city working together to get the I‑17/Dove Valley Road interchange built as quickly as possible,” Phoenix District 2 Councilwoman Peggy Neely said.

“All projects are planned ahead based on funding,” explained Satter. But if funds are provided, “then ADOT will push them ahead.” The City of Phoenix will fund the up‑to‑$18 million interchange, and the state will repay the “loan” in the future.

Both the Dove Valley interchange and widening of I‑17 to Carefree Highway are set to begin in 2007 and scheduled for completion in 2009.

“Anything that helps alleviate traffic and will aid citizens of the state,” commented Satter, “we’re more than happy to assist.”
