CSHS serves up 4A title
Falcons boys tennis team wins first state championship
by Jason Stone

CCUSD – Before the 4A‑Division II state tournament began, Cactus Shadows boys tennis coach Robert Dice tried to warn his young, but talented team to not look too far ahead of itself.

“They’re already talking about winning another state championship,” Dice said before the Falcons’ faced off in last week’s 16‑team tournament. “I told them, ‘Let’s get the first one first.’”

With all due respect to Tom Cruise: Mission Accomplished.

On May 2, the Falcons became the first boys team at Cactus Shadows to win a 4A‑level state championship when it beat Wells Fargo 2 Region‑foe Notre Dame 5‑1 at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.

“The kids are really excited,” Dice said.

The Falcons became the third state champion this school year from Cactus Shadows. The school’s girls volleyball and girls golf teams won state championships in their respective sports last fall.

Cactus Shadows’ No. 1 and 2 singles players and top doubles team had a big hand in the team championship. Teammates Kevin Anderson and Brian Dales, who played each other last week in the state singles semifinals and for the Wells Fargo 2 Region singles championship, won their doubles match over Chris Rock and Ronnie Grossman 6‑2, 6‑2 to help the Falcons win two of three  doubles matches.

Dales then beat Ben Slausby 6‑0, 6‑3 in singles in one of three straight wins for the Falcons that wrapped up the championship. Todd MacIntyre, who earlier teamed with Taylor Gyde in a 6‑0, 6‑1 doubles victory, won his singles match by the same score against Brian Poage. And Gyde’s 6‑0, 6‑1 singles win over Zach McNeil wrapped up the title.

It was the Falcons’ second win over Notre Dame this season after they shut them out 9‑0 in the regular season.

The victory capped a successful state tournament that saw the Falcons win 20 of the 22 completed matches.
