DVUSD
– Continued growth in the Phoenix metropolitan area is
reflected in the latest budget numbers from Deer Valley
Unified School District.
Director
of Fiscal Services Jim Migliorino presented the final
revised budget to the DVUSD governing board for the 2006‑07
school year at its May 8 meeting. The total maintenance
and operational budget is $176,094,875, up a little more
than $4 million from the budget adopted by the board last
summer and almost $12 million more than the final revised
budget adopted for the 2005‑06 school year.
Migliorino
said the growth averaged out to about four percent, slightly
less than the last few years. “That’s because our growth
has slowed, relatively speaking, compared to the last
few years.”
The
$176 million does not reflect any capital expenses, as
those monies are kept in a separate budget and, by law,
cannot be mixed with the general budget. The total revised
aggregate school district budget is $204,980,705, of which
$13.2 million was allocated to federal projects.
Teacher
salaries, mirroring the entire budget, were up 4.2 percent
to $85,868,875. Of that, $17. 6 million went toward employee
benefits.
Special
education was up almost $3 million to $30,274,000, and
student transportation was up three percent to $10.1 million.
The
governing board asked Migliorino to clarify a few numbers,
mainly items that received last‑minute updates,
but generally refrained from commenting and adopted the
revised budget by a unanimous vote.
Migliorino
said this is the last budget revision for this school
year and his department now is turning its attention to
the fiscal year 2007‑08 budget, expected to be around
$185 million. He said the estimated $9 million increase
is due to the district‑wide implementation of full‑day
kindergarten.
The
board will begin reviewing next year’s budget for adoption
later this summer.
