Breakthrough year ends for Jaguars
by Jason Stone

DVUSD – Boulder Creek is officially on the state’s boys volleyball map after just their first season.

The Jaguars sent a message to the future by reaching the quarterfinals of the 5A‑Division state tournament without the aid of any seniors.

Boulder Creek (27‑13) nearly made the 5A Final Four May 11, but lost a close 25‑21, 25‑23 decision to No. 2‑ranked Catalina Foothills, the eventual state champion.

The seventh‑seeded Jaguars made school history May 9 by winning their first state match–a 25‑20, 22‑25, 25‑16 thriller over Marcos de Niza.

The state finish backed up a season that saw the Jaguars barely lose in the Northwest Region championship game and win another in‑season tournament, the Notre Dame Invitational. The Jaguars also achieved their goal of hosting a first‑round state match, which they did by earning a No. 7 seed.

O’Connor reaches state first round

DVUSD – Sandra Day O’Connor joined Boulder Creek on the list of North Valley teams that made it all the way to state.

The Eagles, however, were not able to make it past the first round. O’Connor (9‑20) qualified as the 16th and final seed, forcing it to face No. 1 Sahuaro. That resulted in a two‑game loss, as Sahuaro won 25‑13, 25‑12.
