Falcons track cracks top 10
by Jason Stone

CCUSD – A handful of impressive individual performances helped vault the Cactus Shadows boys and girls track teams into top 10 finishes at the 4A‑Division II state track meet last week at Mesa Community College.

The Falcons’ boys and girls teams each notched 28 points in their respective competitions as each finished in 10th place.

Austin Bailey and Mike Pope did the most damage for the Falcons’ boys team. Bailey took second in the 200 meters and third in the 100. Pope, meanwhile, leaped to third place in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump, setting school records in both events.

The Falcons also received points from its 4x100–which featured Bailey as well–and 4x800 relay teams. The 4x100 team took seventh, while the 4x800 team came in eighth.

Cactus Shadows’ girls team tied Flagstaff for 10th place, thanks largely to the Natalie Omundson show. Omundson took home second, third and fourth places and was part of the fourth‑place 4x400 relay team. Omundson was a close runner‑up in the 3,200, placed third in the 1,600 and finished fourth in the 800.

The girls’ 4x100 relay team ran to a fifth‑place finish, while Jenny Rasmussen took seventh in the long jump.

Glendale won the team championship for the boys with 74 points. Queen Creek, which took second in boys, won the girls championship with 123 points.
