– The judges have spoken: Those kids can play.
The
jazz band at Sandra Day O’Connor High School won top honors,
earning a Superior rating with Distinction, at the State
Jazz Festival, April 27, and have been invited to play at
numerous events, even on a cruise ship.
Jazz
band Director Melanie Britton said this is the fourth year
the band has been in existence, with SDOHS now open five
years.
“Right
from the start, they were pretty amazing,” she said. “But
each year they seem to get better and better.”
All
members must audition for a spot in the band, which is 23
members strong this year. Auditions take place in the fall.
Ben
Pincus, who is finishing his first year as the piano player
for the jazz band, said he intends to audition again next
year, his senior year.
“It’s
the most fun I have in the day,” Pincus said. “Being around
that much talent is just fun.”
Pincus’
mother, Shelley, said her son always has been a big fan
of jazz and she’s very proud of what her son has accomplished
so far.
“The
feeling of pride (seeing him play) is overwhelming, almost
selfish,” she said, adding she began taking Ben to piano
lessons when he was four years old. “I gave him this gift,
this music, that he’ll have for the rest of his life.”
The
jazz festival was a positive experience, according to Britton,
especially considering the high points from the judges.
“The
Superior with Distinction means it was an overwhelming vote,”
Britton said.
This
past weekend, the band played at the “Everyday Heroes” event
which is televised on Cox Cable Network.
SDOHS
Principal Jack Dillard said the school is very proud of
the jazz band and its accomplishments.
“The
kids work very hard and Melanie is a very talented teacher,”
Dillard said . “Any honor they receive is certainly worked
hard for and earned.”
“It’s
the best band experience I’ve ever had,” said the young
pianist.
