Question: From my understanding of Matthew 22, people will
not be married in heaven like we are here.
So is marriage still going to be part
of God’s plan?
Answer: The husband left a note on the refrigerator for his
wife which read, “Someone from the Gyna
Colleges called and said the Pabst Beer
is normal. I didn’t know you liked beer.”
Well, try as we may, we never seem to
fully grasp all that is going on. Such
is the case as we try to perceive eternity
and marriage from God’s point of view.
In
Matthew 22, the Sadducees asked Jesus
who a particular woman would be married
to in the Resurrection. Each man she married,
died until she was ultimately married
to seven different men while on earth.
Jesus declared, “You are mistaken. For
in the Resurrection they neither marry
nor are given in marriage.” (See Mat 22:23‑32.)
I’ve always wondered why husband number
five, six or seven didn’t start asking
what she was putting in the coffee.
There
is a greater destiny for God’s people
than we have imagined. History is not
mainly the story of famous world rulers
or kingdoms of man, as much as it is His‑story.
As God said that it was not good for Adam
to be alone, so too it was not good for
God’s Son to be alone. While engulfed
in a very deep sleep, Adam’s side was
opened and God produced a rib to fashion
a bride for Adam.
While
the God‑Man Jesus Christ was dying
for sins on the cross, His side was opened
by a soldier’s spear producing water and
blood. The church was birthed, which according
to Revelations 19:7, 21:9, and 22:17 became
His eternal bride. The climactic goal
of history will be Jesus Christ the Bridegroom,
sharing His throne with the bride who
is the church. (See Rev 3:21.)
The
church may be made up of many members,
but it is only one body. Thus, “God causes
all things to work together for good to
those who love God, and are called according
to His purpose,”(Rom 8:28). His eternal
purpose throughout history has been to
find a bride for the Son, who would share
His throne, and be His eternal companion.
Some
may say Satan is winning the war over
good and evil because Jesus said, “Enter
through the narrow gate, for the gate
is wide that leads to destruction, and
there are many who enter through it,”
(Mat 7:13). Not so when one considers
that God’s purpose in all of history is
to find a bride for the Son, who will
be an eternal companion, and reign with
Him forever. Numbers are for sporting
events. God is looking for faithfulness.
