CROWN
KING – The “World’s Shortest Parade” at noon, May 28, kicks
off Memorial Day celebrations in Crown King. Floats travel twice
up and back Main Street of the little 1888 ghost town in the
Prescott National Forest, a 90 minutes drive from Phoenix.
The
grand opening of Rocky Road Sweet Stop, featuring Thrifty ice
cream, face painting, raffle prizes, and other activities are
available during the weekend. In addition to Crown King’s historic
buildings, the town features restaurants, saloons, and the 102‑year‑old
General Store and Curios Shop. Miles of riding trails are open
to Jeep, bike and 4x4 enthusiasts.
From
I‑17, take Exit # 248 Bumblebee and follow the 26‑mile

Two
to receive volunteer of the
year award this year
ANTHEM
– During the intermission of guest conductor Keith Brion’s Sousa‑inspired
Phoenix Symphony concert May 25 in Anthem Community Park, the
General Federation for Women’s Clubs’ (GFWC) Anthem Women’s
Club will present its 2006 Volunteer of the Year award to two
recipients for their outstanding contributions of talent and
service to the communities of the North Valley.
“These
are two exceptional community leaders,” says Heidi Banning,
GFWC Anthem Women’s Club 2005‑06 president. “Each has
contributed to the well being of our community so much so we
chose to award both of them this year.”
Each
recipient will receive a check of $125 made out to the charity
of their choice. Judging is based on the activity, need, leadership,
initiative, innovation and challenges faced by the nominees.
Nominations for the 2007 award will be accepted between Jan.

Rotary
supports Teen
Challenge
ANTHEM
– The Rotary Club of Anthem held its annual tour and breakfast
at Teen Challenge Ranch in New River, and Rotary President Craig
Boates presented Rick Castro, center director, with a $2,000
donation for the
program.
According
to Teen Challenge, their success rate for recovery and rehabilitation
is 76 percent, compared to government programs with only a 24
percent success rate.
Model
search on at
Outlets
ANTHEM
– The search is on for male and female models ages 5 to 19 during
Outlets at Anthem 3rd Annual Model Search on June 3. Free registration
begins at 8 a.m. for ages 5‑12, and 11 a.m. for ages 13‑19.
Each session includes a contestant “cat walk” and Outlets fashion
show. Winners must be present at the11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. announcements
to win.
Four
grand prize winners will each receive a one‑year modeling
contract with Ford Robert Black Agency or S.I.M. Agency. They
will also get complete makeovers from 2BU Salon and prizes from
more than 75 Outlets stores. Outlets will feature all four winners
in a full‑color back‑to‑school ad in newspapers
throughout the Valley this July.
