Wright
Foundation offers kid’s tours
The
Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation is offering
the Creative Architecture for Juniors tour
through Aug. 31 to introduce young people
to the importance of architecture, the roles
of an architect, and how shapes, colors
and patterns of nature were used by Wright
in his designs.
Families
tour the main complex of buildings at Taliesin
West, including the Taliesin West Living
Room, and the tour includes an interactive
activity designed to engage visitors.
Adults
must be accompanied by a child or student.
Admission is $16.50 for adults; $10 for
children 13 and older; and $8 for ages 4‑12.
Taliesin West is located at 12621 N. Frank
Lloyd Wright Blvd. in Scottsdale.
Taliesin
West opens at 10:30 a.m. Monday through
Sunday and is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday
during July and August.

PPP
contest winners announced
April
marked the five‑year anniversary
of Pinnacle Peak Park.
Among
the planned celebration activities
was a children’s art contest in which
participating children hiked the park
before the event day.
Children
who entered received a drawing of
only the silhouette of the mountain,
and they were to draw or paint whatever
they saw in a way most meaningful
to them.
The
top‑10 junior artists were chosen
for their art to appear on greeting
cards to benefit Friends of Pinnacle
Peak Park. Each child who entered
received a gift.
The
contest was coordinated by local artist,
children’s educator and mother of
five, Diane Barbee.

Classical
music concert in Carefree
Pianist
Robyn Wells will present a classical music
concert at 4 p.m., June 10, at Christ
the Lord Lutheran Church in Carefree.
The
concert features works by Beethoven, Mozart,
Chopin, Satie, Saint‑Saëns, Coleridge‑Taylor
and Lecuona. The eclectic selections are
unified by the emotional expression inherent
in each piece.
Wells
will also feature a set of three African‑American
spirituals in celebration of the release
of her latest CD, “Hymns, Songs and Spirituals.”
She
earned her Bachelor of Music degree in
piano performance from Pacific Lutheran
University in Tacoma, Wash. and her Master
of Music degree in piano performance from
Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She
held positions as staff accompanist at
both universities. Currently, Wells is
a faculty member at Albertson College
of Idaho.
As
a soloist, Wells has performed with the
Albertson College Sinfonia, the Miami
University Symphony Orchestra, has been
a featured soloist on community concert
series in Idaho, Michigan, Massachusetts
and Colorado, and has given performances
in Canada, Norway and Italy. Since 1993
Wells has managed and performed her own
series of concert tours, which have totaled
more than 200 engagements throughout the
United States.

Carefree performance is free and open

Pedregal offers cool summer treats
Shoppers
drawn to el Pedregal’s distinctive mix
of boutiques and galleries can enjoy a
refreshing boost this summer with the
debut of “Carefree Cool Summer Shopping
Days.”
These
special Saturday morning events will offer
free music, entertainment and chilled
treats in el Pedregal’s central courtyard
from 9‑11 a.m., beginning on June
2 and returning on the first Saturday
of each summer month.
Among
the highlights will be cool, tropical
drinks and frozen fruit snacks at different
refreshment stations throughout the center.
Specialty chilled soup and summer menu
items will be available for purchase in
The Bakery.
Shoppers
will receive merchant discounts and special
one‑day sales in boutiques and stores
as well as gift certificate coupons awarded
with purchases from shops and galleries
redeemable at designated shops in the
center. Boutique trunk shows will take
place in various locations and featured
artists will be in participating galleries.

Pedregal encompasses 80,000 square feet
of space located at the southeast corner
of North Scottsdale Road and Carefree

Lunchtime
theater explores dreams
The
Improbable Theatre Company explores dreams
and their hidden meanings during its lunchtime
presentation of “Suppressed Desires”
at noon on June 5, 7, 12 and 14 at Herberger
Theater Company, 222 E. Monroe St. in
Phoenix.
Patrons
can bring their own lunch or pre‑order
a box lunch catered by Coffea Café.
Improbable
Theatre Company operates with support
from Arizona Bridge to Independent Living
and is partially funded by the Phoenix
Arts Commission and the Arizona Commission
on the Arts.
ABIL

for AZDance Group’s Summer theater Arts
Intensive program is underway with classes

The
first session of classes for Movement
E‑Motion, the program for young
adults with physical and mental disabilities
begins on June 4 and runs Mon.‑Wed.
through June 13.
A
second session runs June 18‑27.
All classes are from 10 a.m.‑1 p.m.
Cost
is $236 and includes snacks, a T‑shirt,
three performing arts classes each day,
and an end‑of‑session studio
showcase June 13 and 27.
Classes
for intermediate/advanced trained teens
and adults will begin June 5 and run through
June 14. A second session will convene

Houser
exhibit at Heard North
A
retrospective of work by the celebrated
sculptor Allan Houser, a Chiricahua Apache,
is on display at Heard Museum North through
June 30.
The
Heard was one of the first Arizona institutions
to collect Houser’s work beginning in the
1950s.
Through
photographs and historical notes, the exhibit
documents the museum’s relationship with
the artist during his 60‑year career.
Curated
by Tricia Loscher and featuring works from
private collections and the Allan Houser
Archive in Santa Fe, N.M., the exhibit encompasses
paintings and his masterful wood, stone
and bronze sculptures.
A
$3 suggested contribution is accepted. Hours
