DVUSD – When Dannene Truett was asked to go out for coffee, she knew something was up, but she didn’t know that she’d just been named The Arizona School Administrator’s Principal of the Year.

While Truett had coffee with Assistant Principal Robin Hollowell, the rest of the teachers and staff of Hillcrest Middle School assembled the students in the gymnasium along with Truett’s family.

After returning from the brief coffee run, Truett was told she was needed in the gymnasium immediately. And as she walked in, the band started playing and the cheerleaders started cheering.

“I got a little emotional,” said Truett.

After getting everything in order, Arizona Secretary of State Jan Brewer personally presented Truett with the award.

“That just blew me away,” said Truett, adding she has known Brewer for years, making the event even more special.

Truett now is in the running to be named principal of the year for the entire country, and will be sent to Washington, D.C., in October to attend a special dinner where the winner will be named.

“I’m excited,” said Truett. “I’ve only been in middle school for three years. I was a high school principal before that.”

Truett was the principal of Deer Valley High School from 1994 to 2000 before retiring and working part‑time for the district. In 2004, she was asked to be the interim principal of Hillcrest, but she liked the job so much, she applied for it on a full‑time basis and was hired.

To enter the contest, the principal has to be a member of ASA and be recommended by another member. Once the nomination comes in, the person nominated is responsible for filling out the application.

“They ask for a resume and ask you three essay questions,” said Truett.

Truett also received the required endorsements from the district, a parent, a student and a teacher.

The award and a dinner in the nation’s capital weren’t the only thing Truett received. Hillcrest art teacher Margit Goodman presented a chalk‑drawn portrait of Truett to her at the ceremony signed by the entire student body.

“It’s beautiful,” said Truett. “Except I don’t know where to put it.”
