The
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the General
Electric Company announced a recall of 2.5 million GE
built‑in dishwashers manufactured between September
1997 and December 2001.
According
to the press release issued by GE, normal use of liquid
rinse aid in the affected models could result in a concentration
of rinse aid on the wires inside the dishwasher door,
degrading the insulation and causing an electrical short.
This short could overheat and cause a fire if the wire
comes into contact with the metal door.
GE
is offering a free repair for the dishwashers, or a rebate
of $150 or $300 depending on which model of dishwasher
you buy.
To
see if your dishwasher is on the list, go to geappliances.com
and follow the instructions, or call (877) 607‑6395.
Have the model and serial number on hand at the time of
the call.
The
recall was prompted after 135 reports of overheated wiring
and 56 reports of property damage, including 12 reports
of fires that escaped the dishwasher. No injuries were
reported in connection with the incidents.
