DESERT
FOOTHILLS – Half‑price tuition vouchers for $170 each
will be awarded to17 Foothills area students to attend the
Desert Foothills Community Education Performing Arts Camp
at Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center from June 5‑17.
Deadline
to apply is June 1. To be eligible, students from grades one
through 12 must be recommended by a teacher and write a paragraph
answering three questions.
For
more than 20 years, the camp has featured intensive schooling
by world‑class mime artist C. Nicholas Johnson, which
culminates with a student performance.
The
stage production combines a video (created over a two‑week
period) with the live performance. Students receive a performance
DVD, a scrapbook and free tickets for the June 17 show. For

‘The
Complimentary Coupon’
VALLEY
– Students entering grades one through six can continue to
improve their reading skills during the summer by participating
in Barnes & Noble’s “A Summer of Unfortunate Events” reading
program May 29‑September 8. For every eight books students
read and log, the bookstore will give them a coupon for a
free bestselling paperback.
Each
student will also be entered to win an autographed copy of
the13th and final installment of Lemony Snicket’s “A Series
of Unfortunate Events,” due out this fall. For more information,

‘The
Bourne Expedition’
CAVE
CREEK – Skyler Bourne, 14, son of long‑time Cave Creek
residents Bruce and Tamera Bourne, is traveling to the United
Kingdom and central Europe this month on an extended sightseeing
trip. He will be the guest of Bill, Kristin and Katie Shelton
of Brno in the Czech Republic.
A
graduating honors student at Desert Arroyo Middle School,
Bourne won the 2006 Cave Creek School District K‑8 Spelling
Bee. He will enter Cactus Shadows High School this fall.
District
offers sweet reading deal
CCUSD
– The Cave Creek Unified School District is offering its first
district‑wide summer reading program: “Reading Is Sweet.”
Students who read 12 books, for 12 blocks of 30 minutes each
or 12 segments of 50 pages each will earn a sweet treat.

City
seeks to recognize students with disabilities
VALLEY
– The City of Phoenix Mayor’s Commission on Disability Issues
in cooperation with the Equal Opportunity Department is accepting
nominations for students with disabilities, who have contributed
significantly to the advancement of people with disabilities,
for its annual Ability Counts Awards. The city will recognize
students in grades one through 12 who have successfully overcome
barriers to accomplish personal and academic goals.
To
be eligible, students must have a disability and reside or
attend a school in Phoenix. Cash awards range from $500 to
$2,000. Nominations must be received by 5 p.m. June 9. To

Retirees
reunite over breakfast
DVUSD
– The Deer Valley Unified School District will host a retiree
reunion breakfast for former employees. It will be an opportunity
for them to visit with former co‑workers and hear about
district news from Superintendent Dr. Virginia McElyea.

State
to display special ed students’ artwork
SCOTTSDALE
– The art work of Cactus Shadows High School special education
students Ashley Abbruzzio, Tham Carroll and Bobby Reisner
was recently selected for display at the Arizona Department
of Education’s annual Transition conference to be held in
September. Additionally, Reisner’s illustration entitled “Shapes”
graces the program’s cover.
The
Transition conference, “Voices, Choices and Results,” will
focus on many topics including assistive technology, secure
care, community resources and youth and young adult empowerment.
The conference is for workers in the special education field,
individuals with disabilities and family members.
Read
books to catch balls
VALLEY
– The Phoenix, Desert Foothills and Scottsdale libraries
in addition to nine other libraries throughout the county
are offering a summer reading program to kids aged 18 and
under. Their reading can earn them prizes including a ticket
to a Diamondbacks game and a chance to attend a baseball clinic
through the Read Your Way to the Ballpark summer reading program
which runs through July 30.
Kids
can pick up a game page at participating libraries and move
one space on the board for every 20 minutes, 50 pages or single
book read. Prizes are awarded for every six spaces and at
