Kindergartner Tommy Brown, one of nearly 225 students at Diamond Canyon School in Anthem who met or exceeded the Coyote Reading Club’s goal set for their grade level, throws a ball at a dunk tank target hoping to drop Principal Paul Stanton into the drink. Eight to 10 teachers also took turns on the wet seat. Club organizers challenged more than half the student body who joined the club to read between 40 hours and 90 hours–depending on the grade level–on their own during the school year. Brown was challenged to read 40 hours, but whizzed through enough pages to rack up 60 hours. Other top finishers included fourth grader Syeed Sweis (250 hours), sixth grader Samanntha Wood (230 hours), kindergartner Mason Smith (210 hours), first grader Malena Lee (190 hours) and fourth grader Kristen Wunder (190 hours). Students had two chances each to dunk Stanton or a teacher while classmates cheered them on. The activity was held May 24, the last day of school. Readers also earned school money and rewards from local businesses throughout the year for every 10 hours of reading logged. (Click picture for full size image)
