Graduates
celebrate the end of their high school careers at Sandra
Day O’Connor High School during the commencement ceremony
May 26 at the Maricopa County Events Center in Sun City
West. Some of the 542 “Eagles,” who now call themselves
alumni, seemed poised to soar into their future schooling
or career endeavors, while others nestled themselves
among friends for farewell photos and jubilated on this
landmark occasion.

A
crew from Daisy Mountain Fire Department extinguishes
a small brush fire that ignited at approximately 8:45
a.m. May 24 near the northeast corner of Carefree Highway
and 12th Street. It took five firefighters five minutes
to douse the flames. They also soaked the 15‑by‑50‑foot
area to eliminate flare‑ups. DMFD Capt. Dennis
Tyrrell said a blaze of that size could be caused by
a number of factors, such as decomposing grass that
heats up or someone throwing a cigarette out a car window.
As fire season approaches, Tyrrell advises the following
to avoid sparking a brush fire: properly extinguish
cigarettes, ensure at lest 30 feet around any structure
is clear of yard debris and weeds, don’t burn debris
and don’t start bonfires. It is illegal to have an open
fire without a burn permit. For more information on
burn permits, call Maricopa County Air Quality (602)
506‑6700 or go to www.maricopa.gov/aq/permits/docs/BURN‑APP2.pdf.
