Highschooler Stars in BBC drama
by Kathleen Stinson

CAVE CREEK – Cactus Shadows High School junior Shelby Rose, 16, stars in the BBC docudrama “Pandemic,” which aired early this year on the Discovery Channel and the British Broadcasting Channel.

A Cave Creek resident, Rose plays the part of Lori, a young lady whose father travels to Japan and contracts bird flu, returns home and passes it on to her brother. In this dramatization, the virus has mutated into a contagious airborne state. Her character documents through video taping the entire experience which ultimately results in her brother’s death.

The 90‑minute feature was filmed in Britain, Cambodia and the United States, with Shelby’s character the lead in the U.S. segment, she said.

Rose, who has acted since she was 10 years old, auditioned for the part in April of last year at First Studios in downtown Phoenix.

“It was a real surprise she got the part–at least 200 girls auditioned,” said Janell Rose, her mother. “She loved filming and told me ‘This is what I’m meant to do.’”

Shelby learned about the audition through her agent at Dani’s Agency, a Phoenix‑based talent agency.

“It was very exciting. I can’t wait to do another film, whatever lies ahead,” Shelby said.

The young actor started her career appearing in local community theater musicals. Her mother said she sounds like Judy Garland singing “Somewhere over the Rainbow.”

Shelby loved getting to know the crew and stage hands in “Pandemic.” She was surprised at all the different people it takes to make a film.

“Filming was a lot of hurry up and wait. Very professional with makeup and costuming,” she added.

Although the American scenes were filmed in Phoenix, the film is set in Northern California.
