Calling all volunteers, your services are requested
by Brian DiTullio

CAVE CREEK – Several nonprofit organizations are putting out calls for volunteers to meet their growing needs.

“We have a plethora of volunteer opportunities in this town,” said Evelyn Johnson, executive director of the Cave Creek Museum. “I’ve lived in cities that didn’t have this many volunteer opportunities.”

Kris Proscus, director and librarian for Desert Foothills Library, agrees, noting her library is expanding over the next year to three times its current size and is going to need a lot more volunteers to help it run smoothly.

“We’re looking for people who’ve had a career in the past and are looking for something vital to do,” said Proscus, adding that she may need at least another dozen volunteers.

Johnson said she is looking for docents, the people responsible for telling stories to visitors and guiding them through the museum. Volunteers are given three training sessions.

“They’re not expected to know everything all at once,” said Johnson. “But we do have some required reading.”

Most docents work once a month, said Johnson, with a few of the volunteers working twice a month. She stressed the job is all about sharing an experience with the visitors and that every volunteer puts their unique signature on the stories.

Both Proscus and Johnson also understand some of the volunteers are recently retired and like to travel, saying they are willing to accept people for certain projects or time frames.

But the museum and library aren’t just looking for one certain kind of volunteer. Both directors expressed a need for all kinds of talents, including someone for occasional handyman work. They ask anyone willing to help out in any wayto come in and fill out a form.

Foothills Community Foundation and Desert Foothills Land Trust also are looking for volunteers, according to Johnson. The executive directors of those organizations couldn’t be reached for this story.

Cave Creek Museum is located at 6140 E. Skyline Drive (cavecreekmuseum.org), and Desert Foothills Library is located at 38443 N. Schoolhouse Road. (desertfoothillslibrary.org).
