VALLEY–
Maricopa County Animal Care & Control always seems to
be overwhelmed with cats and kittens during the “dog days
of summer.” In celebration Adopt‑a‑Cat Month,
the organization is offering “2 Fur 1 Cats”in an effort
to place more cats in homes. During June, cat adoptions
are just $99 for two. Adoption fee includes spay or neuter,
vaccinations, a cat license and cat carrier.

Rotary
tourney raises $25,000
ANTHEM
– More than $25,000 was raised for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s
Posse and Anthem area schools by the Second Anthem Posse
Showdown Golf Tournament at Anthem Country Club, sponsored
by the Rotary Club of Anthem.
Qwest
was the title sponsor for the event. Posse member Larry
Klingenmeyer won the $5,000 prize for closest‑to‑the‑pin
contest funded by Walmart.

Encountering
wild animals

puppets entertain

Hike
the park in the cool
CAVE
CREEK – Experience a 2.5‑mile night hike to Clay Mine
in Cave Creek Regional Park, June 16, and hear about the
mine’s history. Meet at Overton Trailhead lot at 7:30 p.m.
Bring a flashlight, bug repellent and hiking stick Not recommended
for very young children..
Learn
how plants survive searing summer heat. A “Plant Adaptation”
1‑mile stroll on Slate Trail begins at Slate Trailhead
at 8 a.m. on June 17. Bring water and insect repellent.
Both
hikes free with park entry fee of $5 per vehicle. Dogs on
leashes welcome. Hikes are limited, so call for reservations

IRS
holds tax‑exempt workshops
VALLEY
– The Internal Revenue Service will conduct three, one‑day
workshops for small and mid‑sized tax‑exempt
organizations June 20, 21, and 22, covering procedures required
to maintain tax‑exempt status and comply with tax
obligations. Sessions are designed for board members, officers,
practitioners and staff.
IRS
revenue agents will explain what can jeopardize 501(c)(3)
status, and cover unrelated business income and gaming,
employment issues, record‑keeping, required disclosures
and an overview of Form 990.
Workshops
will be at Mesa Convention Center, 263 N. Center St, Mesa.

Hike,
picnic with Sierra Club
CAVE
CREEK – The community is invited to join members of the
Saguaro Group of the Sierra Club, for a hike, potluck picnic,
and wildlife presentation on June 20 at Ramada 4 in the
Cave Creek Recreation Area.
Beginning
at 6 p.m., club member Norma Hand will lead a short hike
to point out edible and medicinal plants, followed at 7
p.m. by Ranger Bill Talboys’ talk on the park’s animal night
life.
Chili,
beverages and dinnerware will be provided. Attendees are
asked to bring a salad, desert, bread or crackers to share.
There is a $5 per vehicle park entrance fee.
