Jaguars start at O’Connor

For those who have been waiting with bated breath for the first ever Boulder Creek High School varsity football game, it’s time to mark your calendars.

The Jaguars will begin their program’s history with a bang Aug. 25 as they travel to potential rival Sandra Day O’Connor in the season opener. Because of so many new schools in Arizona, O’Connor and Boulder Creek were allowed an extra game, which necessitated an early start to the season. Most schools will begin the following week (Sept. 1).

Practices for both teams begin July 31, meaning it will be a short summer break for those schools’ football players.

Full schedules for both teams have not been officially released by the schools, but those are expected to come down any day.

Cactus Shadows, meanwhile, released its 2006 schedule last week. The Falcons will start their quest toward another playoff spot with a scrimmage Aug. 16 at Agua Fria. Cactus Shadows begins the regular season a week early as well with an Aug. 25 home game against Kellis, a Glendale school playing its first varsity game.

5A and 4A football playoffs will begin Nov. 9.

STAMPEDE RUSH

It’s hot, but that’s exactly how the North Valley Stampede like it. Despite temperatures sizzling over 110 degrees, the local high school and college level team has another packed week of games ahead.

The Stampede, which are simultaneously playing the American League and Connie Mack league seasons, will host a pair of doubleheaders at Boulder Creek High School this weekend.

After road dates at North and Corona del Sol June 7 and 9, respectively, the Stampede will host Shadow Mountain for two June 10 and the Scorpions for a pair June 11. The first game both days begins at 3 p.m. The second game is slated for 5:30 p.m.

Playing without the aid of field lights, the Stampede has played the early season under the sun. But the team hasn’t exactly wilted, going 4‑3 over the first week of the season.
