ANTHEM
– Boulder Creek High School released a list of student
accomplishments as the 2006‑07 school year fades
into the yearbooks.
Principal
Kevin Imes took a few moments recently to praise the triumphs
of the student body and faculty over the past year, including
one student, Nathan Hay, who had to choose between West
Point and Annapolis.
“It’s
hard enough to get one appointment,” Imes said. “This
student got two.”
Also
of particular note were two students designated AP Scholars
by the College Board, as well as Kalin Schmidt being named
National Hispanic Scholar and Jenifer Rosa earning National
Merit Scholar honors.
“Those
accomplishments are just huge,” Imes said.
Other
achievements he highlighted include an Arizona State University
President’s Scholarship, 202 students involved in advanced
placement classes, 141 students already enrolled through
Rio Salado Community College, and the BCHS team being
named Rookie Team of the Year at the Academic Decathlon.
“It
was our first time competing in the decathlon, so to get
the Rookie Team of the Year is a large accomplishment.”
BCHS
students accrued close to $2.8 million in scholarships
with 25 percent of the high school’s first graduating
class receiving a scholarship.
Boulder
Creek was no slouch in athletics, either, with the boys
swimming team and boys tennis team earning runner‑up
at their respective regional competitions, boys golf earning
regional championship
honors, the boys volleyball team being runner‑up
at the state competition, girls tennis
becoming region champs and finishing runner‑up at
the state competition, with track star Daniel Lovell earning
championship status in the 1,600‑ and 3,200‑meter
races, and as part of
the 4x800 relay team with Jason Shultz, Nick Eeman and
Tanner Walker.
Region
coaches of the year from BCHS were Jay Kopas for the golf
team, Axel Birnbrich for the swimming team, Chad Speer
for the volleyball team, and Chuck Narvin for both tennis
teams.
