Barrett’s sports background, however, was valuable to the
school, which is coming off its most successful sports year
ever. After owning only two state championships at the 4A
level before the year started, the school racked up five
state championships and also won in cheer and dance.
The
girls volleyball and girls golf teams each won their second
state titles in the fall, while boys soccer tied for the
championship in the winter, and the baseball and boys tennis
teams won it all in the spring.
Pete
Gerlach resigned the AD post for new career opportunities
after holding it for a year. Gerlach originally replaced
Dale Nicol, who left for the athletic director spot at Kellis
High School in Glendale in 2005 after four years as the
school’s athletic director.
Barrett
was one of a handful of CCUSD administrators who were officially
assigned at the June 13 governing board meeting.
Roger
Hill, who is moving from Flagstaff, will take over Barrett’s
position as assistant principal for curriculum, instruction
and assessment. Rick Swearengin has been named the new assistant
principal for discipline and attendance at CSHS. Discipline
used to be split up between two administrators. Swearengin
will hold those duties himself.
CCUSD
also hired two new people at the district level. Mary Morgenthal
is the new director of technology, and Judy Byrd was hired
as the director of curriculum and instruction.
