The beauty, the star and the beast:
Pawn and King’s fight  over the Queen

To whom has this never happened? You are in love with a beautiful person, but that person is in love with someone else. It is the oldest story in the world and happens to all kinds of people, including chess players.

The actors of this drama are the beautiful International Women’s Master from Australia Arianne Caoili, the jealous and violent English Grand Master Danny Gormally, and the star of our last article, Armenian Levon Aronian. The scene is the party of the closing ceremony of the Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy, celebrated last Wednesday.

The two winning teams, Armenia in the men’s division and Ukraine in the women’s, had already received their medals. The winners were in the mood to party and everybody was invited. As the night went on, so did the drinking, and an animated Levon Aronian decided at some point that this night was going to be his night. He is the player of the moment, had just won the gold medal, and  was the talk of the town.

On the dancing floor Levon saw Arianne Caoli, one of chess’s sex symbols. She is half Filipino and half Australian, 19 years old, and very attractive. Levon and Arianne began to dance. Danny, 30, was watching from the side of the dancing floor. He was madly in love with her and had been e‑mailing chess’s beauty queen hot and heavy, but he was not the star. Arianne seemed to like the company of the Armenian better and at some point Levon tried to move from words to action with her. This was too much for the Englishman, whose victories haven’t come as readily on the chess board. He jumped onto the dance floor and punched Levon in a fit of jealousy. Thereafter, club security had to intervene in order to stop the fight among English and Armenian players. The result was the immediate suspension of the Englishman and a shiner for the Armenian.

Today we present a brilliant game played by the dancing queen, Arianne Caoli. Her match play was inconsistent in the Olympiad, but in the third round she managed to overcome Women’s Grand Master Irina Chelushkina, from the Serbia and Montenegro team.

1.g3 Nf6 2.Bg2 d5 3.Nf3 Bf5 4.d3 h6 5.Nbd2 e6 6.0–0 Be7 7.Qe1 0–0 8.e4 Bh7 9.Qe2 c5 10.e5 Nfd7 11.Re1 Nc6 12.a3 Qc7 13.h4 b5! You must try not to have all your pawns on only one side of the board, and that is what Caoli is trying to do by taking the initiative on the queen’s side. The result will be a free pawn in the end game. 14.Nf1 Rab8 15.Bf4 b4 16.axb4 Nxb4 17.b3 c4 18.bxc4 dxc4 19.Rec1 Nb6 20.Ne3 cxd3 21.cxd3 Qd7 22.d4? The black pawn is already an advantage for black, while the white d‑ pawn is very weak. The best variation may have been [22.Ne1 Bxd3 23.Nxd3 Nxd3 24.Bxh6 gxh6 25.Rd1] 22...Rfc8 23.h5 Na4?! If you have a free pawn, use it! [23...Rxc1+ 24.Rxc1 a5!] 24.d5 Rxc1+ 25.Rxc1 Nd3 26.Rc4 Rb2?! It was not easy to detect, but much better was to take on d5. [26...exd5 27.e6 fxe6 28.Bxb8 dxc4 29.Nxc4 Nc3] 27.Nd2 Bb4 28.Nd1 Nxf4 29.Rxf4? It was very important not to let the black knight be active in c3. This variation equalizes the game. [29.gxf4 exd5 30.Bxd5=] 29...Nc3 30.Qg4?? In diagram 30...Bf5! The queen is menaced and she can not go back to defend the knight in d2. The game is over for white. 31.Rxf5 exf5 32.e6 fxe6 33.Qg6 Rxd2 34.Nxc3 Bxc3 35.dxe6 Qe7 36.Qxf5 Qf6 37.e7 Qxf5 38.e8Q+ Qf8 39.Qe6+ Kh8 40.Kh2 Rxf2 41.Qe3 Bb4 42.Qxa7 Bc5 43.Qb7 Rf5 44.g4 Qd6+ 0–1
