Educators
attend summer classes
CCUSD
– Approximately 40 teachers and administrators from across
the Cave Creek Unified School District participated in
the district’s first Educational Services Summer Institute
held June 12‑15.
Presentations,
facilitated by district administrators and an outside
consultant, covered topics such as differentiated instruction,
the backward design model to teaching, a six‑trait
writing model, literacy and cognitive coaching. During
lunch, keynote speakers from the Arizona Department of
Education provided additional education strategies. Participants
received a certificate of completion and can apply their
hours for Arizona Teacher Recertification and Professional
Growth credit.
Private
donor expands library collection
DVUSD
– The governing board of the Deer Valley Unified School
District approved private and community donations valued
at more than $1,100 during its June 13 meeting. Three
donors partnered with various North Valley schools to
assist them with facility and educational improvement.
A
private donor gave 136 used paperback books and three
audio books to Anthem School for library use. The Anthem
Rotary Club donated $500 to the National Honor Society
at Boulder Creek High School. Lowe’s donated building
improvement supplies valued at $600 to Sandra Day
O’Connor High School in Phoenix.
Registration
opens at new K‑7 school
ANTHEM
– Registration is now open for Anthem’s newest school,
Canyon Springs School (grades K‑7), located at 42901
N. 45th Ave.
Registration
in Anthem will be June 22 and July 20, from 5‑7
p.m., at Diamond Canyon School administrative offices, 40004 Liberty Bell
Way. Registration is ongoing at the Deer Valley District
Office at 20402 N.15th Ave. For more information, call

Institute
teaches teachers indigenous
culture
VALLEY
– The Heard Museum Teacher Institute provides teachers
of all grade levels with resources to teach their students
about indigenous cultures of the Southwest. Resources
include materials corresponding to the museum’s signature
exhibit “HOME: Native People in the Southwest” as well
as the “We Are!
Arizona’s First People” exhibit.
The
Institute is recognized as a professional development
course and may count toward in‑service credit upon
completion. The session runs June 26‑30. Call (602)

Boulder
Creek hires new assistant
principal
ANTHEM
– Kathy Borgesen, a longtime teacher within the Deer Valley
Unified School District, was recently appointed as the
new assistant principal at Boulder Creek High School.
Borgesen
has been employed with DVUSD since 1986. She comes from
a teaching position at Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale
and joins assistant principals Annie Preston and Steven
Pierce.
Hey
kids, want to go to college?
VALLEY
– Kids ages 6‑14 can attend a variety of classes
during Paradise Valley Community College’s “Kids College,”
July 10‑20.
Now
in its 11th year, the college hosts a variety of fun and
educational courses to expand children’s academic skills.
Subjects include: engineering, astronomy, writing, rocketry
and guitar, as well as specialty courses in math, reading,
fine arts and Spanish. Several subjects are geared to
the academically gifted and motivated.
Classes
meet Monday through Thursday, and range from $89 to $319.
