Eddie Izzard’s “Work in Progress.”

British funny man Eddie Izzard will perform a special two‑night engagement Aug. 17‑18 at  Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts’ Virginia G. Piper Theater.

The comedian, who currently co‑stars in the hit FX series “The Riches” opposite Minnie Driver, will perform “Work in Progress,” a workshop production of his latest solo show.

Known for his unique comic style and enthusiastic fans, Izzard has performed stand‑up comedy and acted in film, television and on stage. He recently earned a Tony nomination for “A Day in the Death of Joe Egg” and reprised his role as accomplice to the title group in the film Ocean’s Thirteen.

 Izzard’s past solo shows include the double Emmy Award‑winning “Dress to Kill” as well as “Live at the Ambassadors,” “Unrepeatable,” “Circle,” “Definite Article,” “Glorious” and “Sexie.”

Mesa theatre presents ‘Beehive’

“Beehive”  a dynamic musical tribute to the legendary girl groups and soloists of the 1960s through Sept. 22 at Broadway Palms Dinner Theatre.

The revue features more than 40 hits made famous by Aretha Franklin, The Supremes, The Chiffons, Janis Joplin, The Shangri‑Las, Connie Francis and more.

The audience will hear such favorites as “It’s My Party,” “Where the Boys Are,” “Proud Mary,” “Downtown,” “Respect,” “One Fine Day” and “Natural Woman.”

Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre is a 500‑seat dinner theatre. In the theatre lobby you’ll find The Playbill Bar, serving cocktails and other refreshments before and after the show. Broadway Palm’s gift shop offers unique gifts, theatre memorabilia, collectibles and more.

Tickets are $43 and $52 for dinner and the show, $20 for children 12 and younger and  $25 for the show only.

Showtimes are 6 p.m. Tue.–Sat. and 5:30 p.m. Sun.

Times listed are for the pre‑show buffet. The shows start between 90 minutes and two hours after the start of the buffet. Matinee performances are on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday with the buffet starting at 11:45 a.m.

Theatre presents thriller

Scottsdale Desert Stages Theatre, an award‑winning, non‑profit performing arts theatre, presents “Deathtrap” at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Aug. 20.

If you were a celebrated writer of Broadway thrillers with a devastating string of recent flops, what would you do for a can’t‑miss thriller script? Beg for it? Pay for it? Pray for it? Or kill for it?

Famed mystery playwright Sidney  Bruhl has hit a dry spell, resulting in a string of failures and a shortage of cash. But his luck turns when he receives a script from a former student–a script that could potentially be another Broadway hit.

This two‑act thriller twists and turns at every corner, making the audience laugh one minute and gasp the next.

Tickets are  $22 for adult and $20 for students and seniors if purchased in advance, and  $25 general admission the day of the show.

Jimmy Eat World in Mesa

Mesa rockers Jimmy Eat World will return to the Mesa Arts Center for a performance beginning at 8 p.m. Friday.

The band was formed in 1994 by four kindergarten friends in Arizona in 1994 who were  inspired by the sounds ranging from early Def Leppard to The Jesus and Mary Chain and The Velvet Underground.

Jimmy Eat World is currently taking a summer break from recording to try out new material in front of an audience. The band will play a string of dates which started in Albuquerque and will stretch to the United Kingdom, Europe and South Africa.

New show at Lunchtime Theater

“Avoiding Calamities and Other Attempts at Life,” performed by Theatre Artists Studio will be the Lunchtime Theater presentation beginning at 12:10 p.m. Aug. 7‑9; 14‑16 at Herberger Theater Center, 222 E. Monroe St. in Phoenix.

 Kathleen Buckstaff shares her monologues for a warm and uplifting experience. Have lunch with Kathleen and feed your soul.

Theatre Artists Studio is a membership organization designed to give its members the opportunity to produce innovative projects. It is a professional theater resource and work space for member actors, directors, designers, playwrights and producers.

Paige Davis trades places as Charity

Paige Davis, host of the Learning Channel’s “Trading Spaces” series will star in the touring musical “Sweet Charity” Aug. 7–12 at ASU Gammage in Tempe.

Davis plays Charity Hope Valentine, a dance hall hostess who repeatedly gives her heart and money to the wrong man.

“Sweet Charity” received three Tony Award nominations for Best Musical Revival, Best Choreography and Best Actress.

ASU Gammage is located on the campus of Arizona State University in Tempe and is one of the largest university‑based performing arts centers in the world.

Tickets are $19.75 – $68 and are available at ASU Gammage or Ticketmaster outlets.

“Pump Boys and Dinettes” celebrates life's simple pleasures on Highway 57 in Grand Ole Opry style through Sept. 9 at Arizona Broadway Theatre.

Set between a country diner and a gas station, this rock and roll, country‑and‑blues musical revue features six cheerful people out to have a good time with tunes such as “Highway 57,” “The Night Dolly Parton was Almost Mine,'” “Be Good or Be Gone” and “Serve Yourself.”
