New commander takes the reins
by Kathleen Stinson

NORTH VALLEY – The Maricopa County Sheriff’s substation in Cave Creek has a new district commander and a new second in command.

Lt. Barry Roska late last week took over as District 4 commander, replacing Capt. Ron Stoner, who recently retired.

“The community has changed since 1998 – I’m happy to return,” Roska said. “It’s the uniqueness of the community  (I like); everybody here is committed to the same goal of a safe environment for families, enhancing opportunities for business through law enforcement, and enjoying their leisure time as well.”

Roska is no stranger to Cave Creek, having worked in the district as a patrol sergeant from 1997 to 1998.  Before taking this new assignment, he worked in MCSO’s Internal Affairs bureau in Phoenix.

Roska related that he is eager to utilize the Desert Foothills and Anthem volunteer Sheriff’s Posses, which he said he is fortunate to have available. In addition, Roska stated he looks forward to fostering a great relationship with the North Valley communities.

“As a new commander, I am open to fresh ideas and new approaches,” Roska said. “If it benefits the citizens, I’m open to at least reviewing it.”

He went on to say, “One thing I am looking forward to is getting out and talking to civic groups and business owners about the Sheriff’s Office and what we can do together.”

Lt. Todd Bates took over as second in command mid‑July.

Before coming to the North Valley job,  Bates worked as a detective sergeant on the Lake Patrol and in Fountain Hills for 17 years.

“I’m excited to be here–I like the vastness of the area with its contract towns and other areas that bring a wide diversity,” Bates said. “My main purpose is to bring stability to the district; we will now have sergeants on every squad, which we haven’t had in the past.”

Bates pointed out that the Sheriff’s Office has also increased the number of administrative staff at the substation.

The District 4 substation’s jurisdiction, in addition to Cave Creek, includes Carefree, New River, Anthem and other communities north of the Phoenix border.
